Cold Steel Recon Tanto sk-5 good for splitting wood

I use a Ontario SP-53 for most my wood splitting tasks. It's awesome and takes the beating.

And it also serves other tasks like brush clearing and digging in a fire pit better than a hatchet.

I personally would not recommend something I have zero experience with.
I applaud your ideals.

Personally, I use my finely honed critical thinking skills to allow me to make generalized recommendations such as "if you want to cut down a tree, you'll want to use a chainsaw", "if you want to quickly go from one side of the US to the other, you'll want to fly", and "if you want to precisely split wood with a baton, you'll want to use a froe". These suggestions are of course mutable given further information.

That being said, I own and use(d) a froe. I don't anymore because I'm good enough with my axe to make all the kindling I need, and I have no need to make shingles. I do occasionally baton my pocket knife through small sticks if I need smaller pieces in camp, sometimes, or I'll just choke up on my axe.

If the question is: "I am looking for a cheap bullet proof knife dedicated for splitting wood", the answer is "a froe". Until the OP comes back to say "I don't want a froe".

OP was talking about making kindling, not making wood shingles.

Aaaanyway..... I bought the CS Recon and it does exactly what I want it to do and it does it very well. I also used it for yard work to chop off some smaller branches and was amazed at how easily it goes through even thicker branches that I would normally think will take a couple of whacks. I am sure I would not be able to do that with a froe.

Here it is next to my ESEE 4
