Cold Steel Recon Tanto (worth it?)

That kind of stinks, the carbon one isn't make anymore....oh well, I guess I'll just find something else. I would have to find one on ebay I guess that someone is selling second hand.

I don't plan to use it outdoors, it would be a bedside knife for defense mainly, but I don't need the thing breaking on me if I am going to hack something (like that dood did in that home shopping channel video with the cheap SS sword.....lol)

thanks for everyone's replies..I might just get teh recon tanto folder that has a smaller blade.

As was previously posted, batoning is when you hit the back of the blade to drive the knife through a piece of wood, thereby splitting it. I was trying to baton through a piece of birch, when the knife broke right at the tang/blade junction. Note that I was just holding the handle to steady the log at the time, and hitting the blade. I posted pics on the original thread where I mentioned this.

As to why I would do this instead of grabbing an axe, the reason is that sometimes, you just don't have an axe! Batoning a knife is a recognized way to split wood in order to, for example, get past an outer layer of damp wood to dry interior wood. In a survival situation, the only cutting tool you have could be your knife. I was trying out batoning for the first time with a knife I didn't care about too much, and one that I thought would be overkill for the task. (BTW, the folks on BF that have a great deal of experience with batoning confirmed my thinking that the knife should have been able to perform this task.)

As their warranty was only a year, and I had owned the knife for considerably longer, I didn't send it in. I donated it to Stamp Labs, but haven't heard anything about it since.

Warranty is one year on folding knives. The Recon Tanto has a five year warranty, like the rest of their fixed blade, sheath knives. This is not a personal recommendation for CS, I'm just giving you the facts.;)

Just picked one up off ebay for a good price (unused Carbon V blade with sheath. I'll let you know my thoughts when it arrives.

I bought one a couple of weeks ago, luckily the store still had old stock so it had carbon v.
I have batoned a couple of test logs including alder and it has stood up very well.
When I bought it I compared it to a ka-bar tanto, the ka=bar was about an inch longer if I remember right and was $5 cheaper however I liked the feel of the CS handle and did not like the feel of the ka-bar handle

Here's my advice, screw the knife and get a shotgun. A pump shotgun is probably the best home defense weapon out there. As soon as you pump it, the guy in your house will start running. If not a shotgun, a baseball bat would be better than a knife, unless it was a very, very large knife.

yeah, thinking about it more I wanted it mostly for collectability. I don't plan on using it much. I think it's a cool knife for the right price and has it's upside. I would probably grab other things by my bed if a situation arose.

Just picked one up on Ebay for a great price. This one has the Carbon V blade too. It arrived yesterday and I am really impressed with the quality. I will use it this weekend and report back.
