just got a recon tanto in carbon v for 36 dollars , good deal i think. but the knife is just about useless as far as wood working / survival stuff goes . its a brute though . i think its design lends itself more to tactical applications witch in that case i think it would perform very well . no chopping ability ,but slices good and could probably punch through a car door but its not really a practical user . the question is what am i going to use this knife for ? i bought it just cause i wanted it and am happy with it as i have plenty of woods knives . comments serious or not are appreciated . what to use this knife for ........hhhmmmm. :D could use it for oppossum huntin :D

I have an original CS Tanto that I've used for butchering moose. The curved edge makes it an excellent slicer. Wouldn't be my first choice for the woods, but in a pinch it would do fine.

I use mine in the woods. As a matter of fact I took it out yesterday. Great knife. It's hard to get an edge back on it though. I have no problems chopping with it.

yeah i agree it is kinda hard to get the edge back once youve destroyd it . im going to do some more testing this week and let you know . it bites into bamboo pretty good , what i really want to do is some slashing tests and use my ranger rd 7 for comparison.

For woodworking, I find tanto tips do really well. The tip can be used like a chisel for push cuts. Carving trigger groves in traps and things like that.

I have had carbon V for many years. I don't find it difficult to regrind an edge. Use a coarse stone.

Hey Guys...

Gutsy...

Comparing the Recon Tanto to the RD7 is like comparing Apples to Oranges.. The RD is in another class altogether...

Why not make the Recon Tanto a Hideout knife..

Pick a Spot where you think it may be handy in a defensive position and Tuck it away...
Never know when a hidden knife may come in handy!!!

roger that normark ! i live in the country so im usually toting one of my large fixed blades around on the property anyway . tons of chores and cutting tasks . if i want to cut something ill just walk out into my huge bamboo grove and wacka stalk thats too close to the driveway. hideaway knife? sure why not .. my duty gun usuall y assumes that role but.......... small rodents and marsupials beware !!!!!:D

ill behead certain species of snake as well . not because they are dangerous or that i am fearful of them but because they taste good !:D

I'am another one who carried the origional tanto when cold steel first brought them out.I carried it in the Marines, and also when small and large game hunting. I thought it was a good knife than and still do now. I've used it to butcher Rabbits Chickens Deer and two Hogs. Only when working on the hogs did I need to stop about halfway through and touch up the edge. about a year or so after I got the knife i got a lansky sharpening kit and keeping a razor edge on it hasn't been a problem since then ymmv:)

I don't chop with a knife unless there is no choice, however I can see no reason that the Recon would not handle chopping chores. I always use a hatchet for chopping.

the blade profile doesnt let the tanto chop easily , the edge is to thick and it doesnt have enough heft . kinda like chopping with a sharpend pry bar and a machete for contrast . but if you re-profile the edge some ......... i think if you reprofile the edge some it will cut better and hold an edge longer imo.

The blade works as a carpenter's knife due to it's toughness. You can whack the spine to drive it into wood to make notches, or use it for some prying. That knife's real strength is it's toughness, so I would tend to use it in that capacity rather than trying to make it something it isn't.

Here's a pic of mine. I use it for a lot in the woods. I've heard a lot of complaints for the tanto not being a good skinning knife. I haven't had any problems yet. I know people who skin with hatchets and hawks. I have even taken this knife to digging up edible roots. I think it's great for survival.

After buying one a few years ago, I gave my Recon to my kid. Couldn't imagine what I would use it for.......
