Just got my first cold steel; a recon 1 and ,man, was the factory edge beyond any other factory edge in sharpness.I had to do nothing with it!!!

Are all cold steel products like this?

I may have to pick up an American Lawman next!!!

The few Cold Steel products that I've owned have had a nice, sharp factory edge. Unfortunately, the steel they use doesn't have very good edge retention at all.

I would say you got lucky, very few of my knives no matter what the cost have come with a truly great factory edge.

It's always a nice surprise to see that the worker grinding that edge took his time and did it right.

The old saying about knives made on Monday might have some truth to it.

My outdoorsman is/was the sharpest out of the box knife I have ever gotten out of 40+knives I own

I've yet to see a NIB Cold Steel that was anything other than razor sharp. Not a huge fan of a lot of their knives, but they can put an edge on them.

Yes, Mine all came super-duper razor sharp, holds a good edge for AUS8 but it will be a close companion with the Sharpmaker.

My cold steel ak47 came very sharp. As for aus8a edge retention ankerson has it ranked with s30v at 58.5 rc. I personally like aus8a and think the edge retention is good but its not super.. I like the ideology of easier to sharpen with adequate edge holding vs super ridiculous forever edge holding and hard to sharpen.

I've had about half of the Cold Steels I used to own be crazy sharp and the other half weren't. The Japan and Taiwan made ones were usually the sharp ones. The Chinese ones not so much.

My Raja 1 came with an awesome edge but my machete was the thickest most uneven grind iv ever seen. I haven't bought another cold steel since.

Had a scary sharp edge on my mini recon1 spear point. The rumors on the factory edges were true in my case.

AUS8a is great steel, IMO, and you can also get the Recon 1 in CTS-XHP.

Both CS knives I bought last year (Recon 1 and Mini AK47) were sharp out of the box, but shared the same problem - the edge grind was extremely asymmetric (like 25 deg on one side and 12 on the other). I would rather get completely dull knife and put the edge myself :thumbdn:

Their older model machetes(and also their tomahawks) basically come with no edge, you're supposed to fix them up yourself. Newer models are somewhat better, but most people will still want to touch them up.

Their knives OTOH...every Cold Steel knife I've got has been extremely sharp.

I totally agree. Sometimes I wonder if part of the appeal of super hard super steels is for collectors, rather than those using the knives a lot each day. I'm not knocking that at all. But give me a blade that is easy to sharpen and has reasonable edge holding rather than super edge holding any day.
