Cold Steel Reviews

Cold Steel is alot of fun and makes some good knives too.

From blowguns to walking clubs to Bastards and folding knives.

I enjoy the hell out of most everything I have ever had of theirs, they make the toys we all wanted or tried to make as kids; Giant Torpedo lawn darts, Shurikens fun stuff, right there.

The videos are great, are they based in reality? Hell no.

Who cares if its not MADE IN THE USA, nothing is, your TV isn't; so are you going to stop watching it?

People that bash Cold Steel don't get it, plain and simple they never will there is no use arguing it either.

I agree with you completely!

I love watching the CS product tests. I'm a little grossed out by all the animal carcases they hack up, but of course they just get the carcasses from a slaughterhouse, it isn't like the animal were killed just to hype CS products.
I know it seems to be fashionable to express contempt for all the Proof videos but they are entertaining, if not informative, and personally I'd like to see other companies show their wares being used in some way or another.

I agree, the hacking, chopping, slaughtering emphasis puts me off. It's like a subliminal message about what you could do to some poor bugger on the street, if mentally ill. How about taking a video cam out and dress a deer or segment a moose. The testosterone pumped meat slashing genre is kind of creepy.:thumbdn:

I watch their videos and it made me want to bought some of their blades.
but before that I am seeing tons of reviews of the blades I'd like to buy, (see where I live make me cost almost twice of the knife MSRP for the shipping, and the taxes I've got to pay.)

What I'm trying to say here is their vids are nice. They boasting about pros and throw away the cons via their videos. But thats why knives reviewer on youtube and blade forums do exist.

The weight hanging tests CS does is interesting. I would have never thought a folder could hold 600 lbs. of hanging weight. Would love to see how some of the other manufacturers folders hold up in that test. Not that it would really mean anything, but would be interesting to see.

Love or hate them, they are a successful company in this industry. There are things about them I like, and things that I don't. I own one Cold Steel knife and one Cold steel Tomahawk totaling about $90 worth of purchases. I have given Murray Carter more than three times that amount for 1 knife.

They have aggressive marketing tactics that can easily sway a weak minded person. Honestly though, for people who hate them, all of the constant bashing on here is only going to fuel the hype even further.

Look past the hype, and look at the knives. Any knife should cut meat. Most knives out there will have no trouble going through a car door. That being said, though, some Cold Steel knives are damn impressive. CS doesn't do everything well, but some of what they do has caught my eye.

I don't love or hate them, and if I find something cheap, I may buy from them again. In the meantime though, this will be my last post about Cold Steel.

I have a CS trailhawk and a CS recon 1. I'm new to the game here, but I like them both. I find the marketing interesting, and I can see how some might find it lame and funny. I know other knives might accomplish the same things as the CS ones do in their vids, and maybe the tests aren't very convincing to knife gurus, but still, at least they try to show the knives being used, even if it is in unrealistic situations.

Also, the triad lock strength tests did impress me.

Wait til you get a custom Demko!

I like most of the knives and don't remember any customers returning them or having any complaints. I do think the tests they do are a bit over the top but hey, whatever sells knives.

They offer good to very good knives for reasonable prices.Lots of new designs that work well.I dont own many of their knives, but im glad they are around and offering up new items from time to time.Just got a Mini Lawman i think is pretty great for < $40.Got it more because of personal reviews here than watching chubby old guys like myself carve up a side of beef. That said,i wish them all the best for future success.

it's weird, when i think of the Glock "torture tests", i think how stupid it is because i know i could do the same thing with my Sig, but i know my Sig is far more accurate and has a much sweeter trigger pull. yet, for some unknown reason, i actually dig the "proof" vids. heck, i like the vids over on knifetests.com too.

Yes, this must be why all of my LE buddies who have Sigs as duty weapons carry their Glocks off duty. :barf:

Not to hijack the thread, but the thoughts on Glocks 20 years ago mirror a lot of the current thoughts on CS knives. Maybe the Soldier of Fortune ads had something to do with it. I don't know.

In any case, my CS Lawman usually sits in a pocket right in front of my Glock 19. I know I can depend on them both. As far as accuracy is concerned, I know two things 1: That the Glock will always be more accurate than I will, no matter how much I train with it and 2: that I've seen James Yeager @ Tactical Response shoot some pretty ridiculous groups at pretty ridiculous ranges with it.

Which for me approaches "knife theatre" more then anything.
This is probably the best ever description I have heard for Cold Steel marketing!

All in all, the videos are fun to watch for the unintended humor in them. I like many of Cold Steel's products, but their marketing is just a turn off. I buy Cold Steel knives despite the ridiculous marketing, not because of it.

I admire Cold Steel for putting their products through tests like that and making it available for everyone to see. Most other companies sell based off of a name and the high end materials used to make their products. The problem with that is the everyday Joe isn't willing to pay the extra cash for a high end product with a Name like Benchmade, Spyderco, ect. Yes I know these other companies make affordable products. But Cold Steel's willingness to test their products gives the everyday Joe a sense of security in buying a cold steel product. The average guy doesn't care about designs or names, they want a reliable knife for a decent price. Cold Steel offers this with the assurance that this product will not fail and heres the PROOF. Its a smart sells pitch..

I enjoy the vids and find them entertaining. I own a couple of CS knives including a Trailmaster and a Spartan and they seem pretty stout. The test vids had no real impact on my decision to buy them.

Not a big fan of their marketing/videos and most of their stuff seems geared toward mall ninjas but I do have Carbon V SRKs and the newer Lawman which is my current EDC-sweet knife, thank you Demko! And I just ordered the Recon 1.

You are correct Sir! If you throw away everything in your house that isn't made in the USA you will be alone. CS makes some good stuff and makes some crap. The big thing is you're not going to pay a lot for either.

I have had good luck with the few Cold Steel knives that I have had. They seem to have the AUS-8 heat treat down very good, as mine always hold a good edge with this steel.

I have 16 CS knives so far and every one of them shows good design and finishing. They are an excellent value for the dollar, IMO.

I think I get the general idea when buying from Cold Steel: Never spend over $75 on one of their knives.

My Cold Steel Talwar had a few issues and IMO, design flaws that bugged me to no end. Waving the knife open wouldn't always engage the lock, which is a HUGE problem if you ever intend to carry the knife for its designed purpose. The lock tension is ridiculously high, making it difficult to open with one hand. Combined with the swiss cheese pattern on the lockback piece, it's a real pain to open and close.

Also, a number of their katanas have similar or lesser quality to some cheaper katanas from other makers.

However, given the glowing reviews of the American Lawman, I'm tempted to buy one myself just to see how it fares. At that price point it seems like a knife you can use and abuse without guilt.

Sit down with a twelve pack and watch their DVDs, it's hillarious. Really fun way to kill a boring afternoon.

I bought the Rajah II as almost a joke at first, due to how big it is and the generally menacing look of the recurve blade. Turns out it's a fantastic user for day hikes and the lock up is just crazy solid. Carried on its clip and I hardly know it's in my pocket for all its size too.

Now a Lawman is on my list and likely others. I'm afraid to order a custom Lawman, I may not need another knife...again.

The videos are total cheese to me, but taken with the right attitude they are fun.

I've owned 3 CS procucts.
A frontier hawk, years ago. The head was loose on the handle, once secured, I bent the blade under normal use. POS
A bolo machete. Poor edge grind, not sharp from factory. It's as if it has no heat treatment. It will kind of get an edge, but after little use it's gone. The handles are too tall.
Lastly, an Outdoorsman. It's a "hunting knife", 6" blade, rubber handle, AUS 8. It is a higher quality item, compared to my other CS products. It does hold an edge, it has a look borrowed from the samuri sword, in it's sweep.

The videos are pumped full of hype. The music is unnecessary, so is the carnage. Like mentioned before, they don't show closeups of the edge after that abuse. So what if a knife can stab a car hood and not break. Lots of knives could do that, but why would you, and how's that edge? Has that test weakened the knife?

Check out other reviews of a product, not just the manufactures videos.
