Cold Steel Safe Maker II - can I add a Black oxide coating?

Caswell has a stainless blackener,I don't know how well it works , but could be worth a try.

Man that's pretty sweet and would be perfect. They have a small gel kit for $20 that would be more than enough and leave for other projects.

This would be a much better option over paint I think dont you guys?

That casewell product seems high and it seems their confident in their product. Anyone else know if they indeed do offer high quality products usually?

So after 2 years I finally tried this caswell blackener and had mixed results.

I tried just the blackener & it was very spotty and I called Caswell. They said to soak the knife in a 50% muratic acid & 50% distiller water for like 5-10 min.

I did that and it then re-blackened it and it did come out with a nicer finish the 2nd time.

But now I'm having issues with the 2nd part of the SS blackener kit, the "sealer" which according to Caswell is like an enamel with the consistency of water.

The problem is once I apply the sealer, which I have done twice now, with many coatings each time, the coating just rinses off with slight abrasion. I let it dry for a couple hours the first time before rinsing it and a few weeks the 2nd time and the coating came off just as easy.

Anyone have any ideas?

If I don't use their sealer, how will this affect the AUS 8A Japanese SS the SafeMaker II is made from since it's been oxidized, stripped in muratic acid/distiller water & then re-oxidized.

I do remember it rusting quite a bit after the first attempt just from sitting in humidity in a garage.
