cold steel scimitar or gerber applegate

Well Jake, I am in a pretty ugly mood right now because I had a wisdom tooth pulled yesterday, so I apologize in advance if I ruffle your feathers. Quality is subjective. What is great for you may not be great for someone else, especially if that someone wasn't even asking about your preferred brand of knives. Your unsolicited comments really come off as rude. Your put downs of other knife companies (referring to better options and better quality of your favorite knives) make you seem like one hell of a fanboy. Do you work for Spyderco, Benchmade or Kershaw?

Scimitar. Carried one for a year and loved it! A little too big to carry since I got promoted at work and have to wear a suit now.

I feel you on the wisdom teeth brother. My Girlfriend had hers out about a year ago, and it was a very painful experience for her.

I also agree that quality is subjective. I don't work for any knife company (wish I did tho), but I used to sell knives at a sporting goods store for 4 years, and during that time have had the opportunity to handle, use, and research knives from all brands. I did not "put down" any knife company to the OP, I saw what he was looking at, researched the price point, and for what he wants to spend... there are better choices. Just because they're from other knife companies doesn't mean I dislike the companies that the OP is looking at. These are my opinions, and until the government takes away the freedom of speech, I will state them. Whether or not you, or the OP wants to listen to what I have to say is completely up to yourselves. Maybe I am a fanboy. It just so happens that spyderco, BM, and kershaw all make great stuff. Doesn't mean everyone else's stuff is crap.

Kind of like you introducing me to your blonde girlfriend and me telling you, in front of her, that redheads are way better women than blondes.

Yes, it is your opinion and you certainly do have a right to it, and to express it, but sometimes discretion and tact go a long way as opposed to an unsolicited opinion.

Having had (and sold) both the Scimitar and Gerber, I'd recommend the Scimitar of the two.

The Gerber felt somewhat flimsy to me.
The Scimitar, on the other hand, was a solidly built knife in comparison.

Ah, if only everyone had the same intelligent taste in knives as some of us.... Why do some people even bother with Brand X? They should know that MY brand is way better than their choice....

Why give an unsolicited comment like "Neither" when the OP was asking a question between two specific models?
Just to hear yourself talk?

maybe to give the guy some info on the knives in question from someone who has owned both?

i have owned both applegates (plural) and scimitars(again, plural) and had lock probs with the applegates and just didnt like the scimitar, didnt like the way it felt in the hand, and i like blades like that too FWIW, heck i wanted to like the thing lol,

if i thought both were great, i woulda said that.

at least the scimitar was ok functionally & locked up ok.

but, of those 2, with all the great, inexpensive knives around today, with new designs and better ergos, i cant in good faith reccomend either of those knives, they are old designs which imho werent very good 10 yrs ago, much less now, just way too many better knives to choose from.

i ended up ordering a plain edge scimitar.

i dont mind the other suggestions, its just that i already do have plenty of benchmades, spydercos, and kershaws. sure there are more practical, better knives for the price, but sometimes you just want something different, or a certain knife just keeps calling your name for some reason.

i do have a gerber mini covert which is really awesome, but its lock is different from the applegate.

scimitar all day. I got one and love it. My martial arts instructor has one and swears by it he buys them in bulk in case he looses one he has another. Its the only knife he says he has carried for years. He says in his opinion that the scimitar is the perfect knife for someone who practices self defense or carries a knife for that reason. And it is not that expensive

i got the scimitar today, its actually really nice. strong and sleek, this is a wicked blade. i didnt quite feel like saladin on the 3rd crusade like the ad for it implies, but it its a keeper for sure.

I like my scimitar, the most difficult with CS knife is to make a choice between plain edge or serrated...

I would go with plain edge, imo cold steel serrated is a fantastic cutter, the problem with it is that you cannot sharpen it compared to other serrated knives. The cold steel serration are prone to breaking off during hard use, which I found out when I was testing a cold steel voyager.

The problem with that is the Voyager is hollow ground. I have the very similar Cold Steel Vaquero Grande, which is flat ground. I have beat on that knife like you wouldn't believe, chopping and slashing for years. When the serrations dull, I steel the back of the blade and this straightens the serrations back up.

I got an X2 Voyager to replace my VG but the edge rolled badly, then chipped out massively. The hollow grind couldn't take the stress like the flat grind.

My brother has the gerber (larger) and has used it for years including while camping (yes opening cans with it) I have had one for about 4 years now also the large bladed one.
I am not a fan of this style blade as it is not a multi-use design IMO.
However when I heard of the "lock" problems with the knife I tried to make my lock fail using the normal types of test.
It remained solid.
Neither my brother or I have ever had a problem with ours, so I would recommend one if that is the style blade you want

These are interesting points that come up regularly.

First of all, you have no idea what he wants to spend. You only know what he wants to buy. Maybe he found a deep discount on them, maybe he wants to spend less but he's willing to shell out for an interesting design. Maybe he's stocked up on Spyderco, Benchmade, and Kershaw and wants to try something else.

But I do think opinions are worth stating, even if they are outside the original question. Topic drift is what brings in the new ideas that often informs a poster of possiblities he hadn't considered.

It has nothing to do with the government taking away freedom of speech, though. Bladeforums is a private enterprise, and your freedom of speech is legitimately restricted by whatever Spark decides. The Constitution has nothing to do with it.

I think that was well said.

In regards to the above quoted's previous post in this thread, I would agree---the serrations of the X2 pale in comparison to the toughness of the Vaquero Grande. It is amazing how something can affect other parts of performance so drastically---some people don't care whether they're packing a knife with a hollow or flat grind, or chisel grind, or convex, or whatever, but it makes a conspicuous and unbelievably significant impact on Cold Steel's serration pattern here.

I'd go with the Cold Steel in a heartbeat!

The black one is very nice. There are CS knives I like better, but I like the Scimitar just fine.
