Has anybody else seen or handled a Cold Steel Sisu yet? It is modeled after the famous Tapio Wirkkala puuko. According to their web-site, no expense was spared in materials (which is reflected by the price). A bit too pricey for this old boy, maybe they'll come out with a less expensive version. Check it out...

The original had some drawbacks: brittle blade, slippery handle (when cold or wet or gloves on). With laminated blade the brittleness could maybe be avoided, it does not say anything about the handle material, I think the original was PA.

A whopping $400 list price for a 4" factory blade?

Do you know how many real, top of the line, Finnish made puukkos with real laminated blades I can get for that?

$400?!?!? Yee gads!!!!!!I'm sorry, but I'm having trouble just getting past the price issue. Sure, it looks nice, but $400?!?

I believe it said the handle is polished micarta. If they made the same design in 1095 with a more "sticky" handle and a more down to earth price, I'd sure be interested in one.

Micarta might be ok, I have very little experience with it (in handles, otherwise I am not too fond of the material). Laminated blades serve well if done properly, this seems a bit thick though.

I can get one from any of the very best smiths here or about 4 of the best factory-made ones. I agree, basically the price is insane. The one asking for the price is not crazy but the one paying....

My only problem with the laminated blade is that Cold Steel sets a premium on the feature, which is probably much of the reason the price is so high. I agree with your sentiments about the one paying. One need only look at the price Ray Mears' designs are drawing on ebay. Nice knives, no doubt, but priced way beyond reason.

I looks nice.... but I'm with hikers on this one. There are just to many very good alternatives out there for a fraction of the price. For $400.00 you could commission a custom to be made.

What a second.... maybe it comes with your own personal Troll that does all the work for you.;) :D

I have one of these, and they're great knives! If you shop around you can often get one for under $200.00 on eBay. Well worth that price...

Looks to me like bait for guys with too much money to piss away. Why is that any better than a regular pukko? $350 worth of advertising? Surely not because "we have spared no expense or labor in its manufacture", it's micarta and the same steel they use in many if not most of their knives. I know people from Escanaba and I bet they're laughing their butts off over this one. It's a beautiful design but if I wanted to spend $400 I'd go full custom from a reputable maker.
That's a $50 knife.
Just my $.02

When you consider that you could get a mike snody knife in that price range, it should stop you in your tracks. And it should have stopped cold steel from pricing it that high.

You can get a Mike Snody knife for $200.00? I didn't even think he was taking orders right now! The Sisu is far from being a $50.00 knife....

You guys obviously didn't read the advertisement well - it clearly states that this is a knife with Sisu - guts, tenacity, steadfastness, courage, and an indomitable will to succeed and survive.

$399 for a knife that's got all that is a bargain! All my knives are just sharp pieces of steel that cut.

;)

Maybe, but do they guarantee that it works in a Winter War? :p

If you like the shape of the Sisu, try the Finn Bear. I have a CS Canadian Belt Knife, and for the money it appears to be pretty decent. I haven't had a chance to use it much yet, but as far as constructiong goes, it appears to be solid. It isn't the same knife as my Grohmann #1, but I didn't think it would be. Same shape as the #1, and that is why I bought it.

Yes, the price is high, but you pay for what you get, very good control, and top quality, I Luv'mine, no regrets.

paul'ie, a 5 year old thread? :D

OK, I'll play. I have Hackman's Tapio Wirkkala original, not a bad knife. For sure worth the $35 I paid. I also have a Helle Jubileumkniven, a similar knife. The Cold Steel Sisu is the best of them. Decent grip, blade came very sharp but I will eventually convex that edge. The sheath is nothing exciting, but decent leather.

$400  Well, Cold Steel always does that. Not the only one, either. It's called MSRP, Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price. Manufacturers don't need to be competing with their dealers. So the high price leaves a lot of room for dealers to come down to what their customers will buy.

Cold Steel had a few of these high-priced knives and eventually remaindered them for about half that. I don't remember, I think I got the Sisu for about $100.
