The WA1 sticks are actually relatively stiff---only a modest amount of flex. They are not at all like the "whippy" sjamboks I've occasionally seen. According to my buddy who had the authentic rhino hide sjambok, the real things are relatively stiff---like the WA1. Accordingly, it is not difficult to moderate the force of your strike if you are merely trying to motivate recalcitrant cows. This type of stick is said to be used by professional stockmen.
