Cold Steel Spartan...It's Future

What's the story on the Cold Steel Spartan? The knife is favorably reviewed, but is easy to find for about $56 (including shipping) on eBay and demand seems sluggish at best. I have one and like it, but I don't think it would ever be something I'd carry a lot. It also tends to scare people who get creeped out by knives, which I guess works against it.

Is this knife doomed or can it sell in numbers that will sustain it? Have any of you bought the knife and then dumped it in a drawer or do you use it? If so, for what? The knife is strong, but heavy, and would be great for self defense use. I used to carry mine as a trail knife, but replaced it with a Rajah II. Now I rarely use or carry mine.

What do you think?

The handle looks very impractical to me....very very very...just my .02 though

I love mine. Recently, I bought a Rajah III to bridge the gap between the Spartan and my American Lawman. I'd like to say it succeeded, but I really think the Spartan is a complete package.

You know the old saying..."nothing exceeds like excess." The Spartan may be excessive, but it exceeds.

I plan on getting one for the sole purpose of opening my mail...
had a neighbor freak out over the mini SAK I used.

Thing about getting this for self-defense is that it really only works when it's on you constantly. Now you can carry that big honking bulky knife in your pocket 24/7, or you can carry a waved Delica for less than half the weight:thumbup:. Though admittedly the Delica costs a little more for a smaller knife:thumbdn:. Can't imagine why:rolleyes:.

I'm sure its built like a tank, but theres no way in hell I'd buy one.

Some people buy enough ninja stars for companies to stay afloat, I bet these sell just fine.

Hell, I've got lots of more practical knives. But if all one did is live a practical life, think of all the fun one would miss (not to mention all the knife companies/makers/forums that would die).

Well, first, I cannot carry it. I have some fixed blade I can't carry, but I have no used for a folder that I cannot carry.

Second, it just SCREAMS mall ninja/wal mart ranger to me.

Different strokes. I have a SRM710 which others on here just HATE. I think it's a really nice little folder.

Excepting collectors, hunters, LEOs, EMTs, first-responders, and the military: In reality, all most of us really need are; an SAK, a small slip-joint, a multi-tool, and a small fixed blade. The rest is just indulgence.

Sure but indulgence is up to taste.

You could probably even narrow the list of NEEDS down to multi tool and small SAK. Most people could get by just fine without a fixed blade.

Agreed. I'm just saying that everyone is allowed at least one "zombie defense force" knife. I'd rather spend a small number of $$ for that, and save the real cash for something I'll EDC (like a really nice stockman).

I carry mine so much more after I had TheCarbideRat tanto mod it. Recently I've been polishing mine on the belt grinder. CS (or any other company) should not bead blast AUS8. I think I might sand the handles and make it more pants and hand friendly. It's the only other knife I own that locks as tight as my Demko custom.

I found this review, which added some new dimensions.

Some people have said that no folding knife is as strong as a fixed blade, but that's only partially true. Only if the fixed blade has a full tang. And even then I think my Spartan/Rajah is almost as strong as any fixed blade. In other words, I can't ever envision either knife failing under any circumstance. Carrying the Spartan is a pain, granted, and I still like my Voyager 5-inch plain edge and serrated edge knives. Both are lighter and "strong enough" for just about anything. True, they won't chop, they won't cut brush, and you certainly can't cut down a sapling very easily with a Voyager. (Or a Delica, for that matter.)

I managed to get a few Rajah I knives before they vanished and I consider myself very fortunate. I only wish I had gotten more. The Rajah II is every bit as good, but not classy, and I have a couple of them. I just haven't been able to bring myself to carry the Rajah I. Every time I try, the Rajah II beckons and says, "I can do everything that can do and I can keep it purty!" So I do.

It's amazing that most of us live in a country where we can carry these things. I live near Washington, D.C., where the laws change suddenly to a limitation of a knife blade to 3 inches or less, no serrations. With Washington's amazingly low violent crime rate, perhaps other cities should pass similar laws! But in Virginia and Maryland, knives like the Spartan and Rajah are no problems in carrying, and they do make good trail knives.

If they would polish the blades like they did the Voyagers, I'd gladly pay a few more dollars. The Rajah I was polished, and it made a lot of difference; and though I had polishing compound and paste, Cold Steel had ground the blade of the Rajah II in two different directions. So polishing was a waste of time.

I love it! LOLOL

My "Zombie defense fund" however is for a Saiga 12 gauge! Heh Heh Heh!
