COld Steel Spartan Preformance Test

Does any of the Tri-ad locking Cold Steels have claim to being the strongest/toughest, of the bunch?

Bold added by me

I recently got one of these folders and am having the same problem.
I'm assuming it's a 'new knife' issue.
However, it would be nice to know if this is something that will correct itself with use. (Hopefully soon:eek: )
I nearly bruised my thumbs trying to put some wear on it in hopes it would loosen up those first two days.:(

Otherwise, it is one serious hoss of a folder. My favorite kind.:)

I adjusted the pivot screw and added some ultima lube to the lock mechanism then went through my rituals of watching TV and fiddling with the opening and closing of the knife through Transformers 2 :barf:. After that it's now like butter, but to say it was stiff at first was an understatement.

Its a well thought out design Jill, I think the strongest would probably just be the beefiest one in which case the Rajah's, Spartan or Black Rhino. Its weird to me to be on the positive side of a Cold Steel product but these are really well sorted knives. Merry Christmas

Thanks Andy. I would never have thought it would hold as much as one with liners. From what I was looking at the lock is slightly redesigned on the G10 version also. Or rather, the blade and stop position. It does look like a deeper lock notch in the blade too. Of the three Lawman folders I have I do carry the liner less version but mostly because it was the first one I dinged up so I kept using it since it had use marks and I already started using it. I like the way it carries I will say that. I'd like to see a video test of the Lawman and see how much weight it does carry. I keep looking for one on that one so do let us know when one comes up. Honestly I can't recall the last time I bought four of any single model new from Cold Steel. Thats how much I liked this one once I got one in my hands. I'm really liking your Triad lock a lot.

We will have a G-10 frame Lawman video up very soon, I will probably be able to post it sometime tomarrow

Andrew is there anything in works with a blade style of the Spartan but a more conventional grip?

The Spartan is my favorite knife hands down but one with a G10 grip along the lines of the Lawman would kick ass too.

yes, in the 2010 line up

Mr. Demko, love ur lock design (Tri-ad and Pocket Bushman's Ram). Only thing that would make it perfect is for a steel upgrade from Aus-8A. Though easy to sharpen and fairly rust resistant and other positives, there are many people who prefer better steel. Please tell Mr. Lynn.

Thanks and looking forward to your new designs :)

I agree, But as far as 8A goes ours is among the best, even our taiwan made 8A blades are using imported Japan 8a. not the china equivalent.

I'm more interested in the amount of lateral strength loss from moving to G10 alone vs one with liners more so than what the lock will actually hold. Like for example when Andy stood on that Spartan and bounced. I work with G10 and use it on my own custom folders and I know its very rigid but it would be interesting to know what made Cold Steel decide they didn't need liners. Cust. Service told me they found that the liners were not needed. Thats fine and all but I was just curious as to what testing was done to determine this??? That part was not known by the gent I spoke with. I can't help but think there is a compromise somewhere to rid the knife of the liners.

With that said though, some of the changes were good ones, like with the tang of the first model sticking out some when the blade is closed, which was corrected on later models. Also, I noticed on my liner less model that there is a pin inside for the blade to rest on when closed that is positioned beside the rocker arm that is not there on my two models with steel liners which are set up so the blade rests on it in the conventional sense, on the rocker arm raised area like you usually see on lock backs. I imagine this was to prevent some of the reports of blades slapping on the spring when closed? None of my models exhibit his problem.

Overall even with my dinging Cold Steel for some of the changes mid stream on it I liked the model enough to buy multiples of it. I'm not much for recurved blades and don't find much that appeals to me about the Spartan but I can sure appreciate the lock strength and reliability in these tests though. I look forward to the review on the others.

My guess is the Espada. Thats a beast! You'd have to hear from Andrew to know more though. Maybe he'll know for sure. It has to be one of the worlds strongest. I've never seen another knife hold that kind of weight. I've stacked some weight on some and none I tested ever came anywhere near that things record! I did stand on a Fulcrum II by Extreme Ratio though and it took a lot of abuse but you know what? For the money it should! I weigh 220 + lbs and it held me and still worked fine. FWTIW

Yeah, I've been doing a similar drill but I'm using Militec grease. Did it while watching the NBA games today. It's showing signs of breaking in and now it's become a contest to see who is gonna break-in first, the lock or my thumbs.:D

This is my first experience with a "wave" type of folder opener. I can see now why it's so popular.
Can't wait to get a Rajah II now. Should be here in a couple of weeks. Hopefully, my thumbs will be healed by then.:D

That is a great news. I really wanted to test this lock, but so far no knives with it interested me. Triad lock should be used in voyager series or simillar "classic" design knives.

And I totally cool with aus8. Even aus6 is better than Chinese steels, which roll, chip and break no matter what numbers they have in their name.

I'm trying a Spartan out because I don't like to spend a lot on knives I use for chopping brush off my hiking trails. Many don't last too long doing this before they loosen up and the Spartan looks like it's got the size, strength, grip and price to be worthy of the task.
So for 60 bucks I'm trying it and I'm pretty darn convinced it's going to be worth that.

Thanks> I caught it and just as I figured it is impressive. I must say these are some of the highest strength and reliability standings I've ever seen for any lock mechanism. Absolutely wonderful that its so affordable to the average working man too!

In general, the bigger they are the stronger they are in weight hang tests. however there are many other factors that determine a folders overall strength in my opinion. For example, strength to weight ratio.
When we tested the g-10 frame lawman I also , for fun, tested a steel frame g-10 slab folder (not Cold Steel) It felled at 100lbs and weighed around 7.5 oz, not so good
