I've always loved the overall size and design of the Cold Steel SRK. But I've managed to break two of them in my lifetime so I'm not a real believer in the quality. Anyone know of a knife that has the same overall design but is just a lot better built?

I would say the issue you are having is caused by the fact that the steel is stainless. Get a carbon steel knife and take care of it with oil and store it properly, as they are much tougher. My choices would be Esee, Kabar/Becker, or if budget is a concern the cheap little Moras in carbon steel are awesome.

Both of the ones I broke were Carbon V. One snapped right at the choil and the other one just lost its handle. The Kraton pulled right off.

I'd be looking at the Ka-Bar and Becker line of knives if I was you.

Get a Becker. You will be very happen.

I am curious. What were you doing that you broke two of them?

If were to go with something as wide as a Becker I'd just use my Busse BA-E. I like the more slender profile of the SRK.

Batoning broke the first one. Good ole wear and tear wiggled the handle off the other one. Chopping, prying, batoning... stuff like that.

Hmmm. The SKR doesnt have a choil so that may be the first issue.

Have you contacted Cold Steel about these problems? That would be my recommendation. In my experience the SRK is one tough sucker.

Any knife will break eventually when subjected to enough abuse, and you were definitely abusng them.

If you want something similar and tougher I think your only options are the Cold Steel Recon Scout and the Busse TGLB, but I've seen both Recon Scouts and Busses broken from enough batoning. Doesn't matter how well built your knife is or what it's made from, if you abuse it enough, it'l break.

Moral of the story? Bring an axe.

That makes sense. What about the BK5/15? They have a thinner, albeit slightly, profile than the rest of the line. Cost effective too.

We have been this through this before...but please tell us how was he abusing the knife. He was using it doing what it was designed for.

Cold Steel says:

Survival/Rescue operations demand a versatile knife able to withstand the most extreme abuse. The SRK® (Survival Rescue Knife) was designed specifically with this in mind.

My terminology might be off... whatever this little guy is... Ricasso maybe?

This was ages ago. The knife was well over 5 years old. I just threw the pieces away. We did make a spear out of the blade that came out of the handle. Have no idea where that is anymore LOL.

What Busse did you see break from batoning?

Again, I have large wide blades like Busse Combat. I was wanting something a little leaner like the SRK only better made.

I wasn't batoning it with a hammer through a motorcycle frame. It was wet wood and I was hitting it with more wood. If that is abuse for a knife named SRK... maybe they should rename it Box Cutter / Letter Opener.

I'll give it a looksee. I've heard some great things about the Beckers.

It is able to withstand the most extreme abuse...but not forever. A knife is a knife. It's not a splitting maul or an axe.

I guess Busses are just box cutters and letter openers too, right?
I don't care what the manufacturer says. Knives, no matter how well built, are not the right tool for the job. When you are batoning your knife, you are putting your best friend's head onto a hard surface and continually beating it in an attempt to break that surface. Bring an axe.
