Cold Steel SRK but better?

I think that is the first Busse EVER I have seen broken.

Busses are widely regarded as some of the strongest and toughest knives in the world. I'm not posting those images to say that they aren't. I'm posting it to make my point that even the world's best knives will break when subjected to sufficient abuse.

I didn't even know they made SRKs in Carbon V. I think Cold Steel is ok qualitywise, so I would contact them and at least see what they say. I still don't think it's prudent to baton anything more than around 2-3" around, and then only with the grain and not attempt to cut against the grain. During batoning it's possible to find a knot and put intense lateral stress on a knife. If you are in a true survival situation miles from anyone, don't chance it. Split just enough wood to get a fire burning and burn bigger sticks. I've seen youtube videos of people batoning huge sticks, breaking a knife, and proclaiming that the knife is utter garbage. Axes are softer and wider for a reason.

Have you considered a Dumpster Mutt? Not exactly the same specs but the "feel" is similar to me. I got rid of my SRK after carrying my DM for a few months.

Rather than batoning, if you're in that kind of situation without an axe, why not whittle at the wood with the knife, or even make a disposable wedge that can be batonned?

Ah! So that SRK is not able withstand, as CS says, "the most extreme abuse." ... just "sufficient abuse." :D

Back on topic though...Fallkniven.

Ick... I didn't know this was going to become one of THOSE threads. Thanks for the helpful suggestions about different knives to try guys. For those of you guys that are the "You have to use your knife the way I say or you,re wrong." sort... go cry somewhere else. I baton my knives. I'm going to keep on. The SRKs I tried didn't live up to the hype. So far my Busses have. I look forward to trying a Becker and some of the other suggestions.

It is able to withstand the most extreme abuse...but not forever. A knife is a knife. It's not a splitting maul or an axe.

This one.

I guess Busses are just box cutters and letter openers too, right?
I don't care what the manufacturer says. Knives, no matter how well built, are not the right tool for the job. When you are batoning your knife, you are putting your best friend's head onto a hard surface and continually beating it in an attempt to break that surface. Bring an axe.

I believe this particular Busse was modified by a 3rd person party and that the person that modified it buffed it to such an extreme temperature that the surface hardness was changed. Here's the thread on it http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...Outlaw-died!-I-shocked/page7?highlight=broken

I had an SRK (CarbonV) years ago, but a buddy kept buggin me; he wanted the SRK so bad, that I finally traded it to him for another knife.

The SRK has fairly clean and simple lines; why not have a custom maker make you a knife following the general lines of a hard use knife and have it made to your specs - a simple knife like that should not cost an arm and a leg?

I had this made - I could not be more happy with it. It has details from several 'Bushcraft-type' knives, that I like.

PS
Apropos nothing at all; I never understood the fascination with batoning.

The closest that I can think of are the Fallkniven A1 and maybe a BR Bravo 1. Not exactly the same, but not too far off. I know what you mean thought, I have several Carbon V SRK's that I bought a LONG time ago, and they're never leaving, I just love the size and geometry of them.

I've seen the thread before, and I don't believe that for a second, because the heat treat they put on INFI can withstand far greater temperatures than plain carbon steels. He'd have to have thrown the damn thing into a volcano.

Busse does a great heat treat, but it can indeed be messed up by buffing with a power tool. I believe Jerry Busse chimed in and said so himself. In any case, if you do break a Busse they will fix/replace it so no worries.

I just showed you one of the strongest and toughest knives on the planet break because of abuse, and you're ignoring it. If you want to be stubborn about it, fine, they're you're knives, but don't whine about them breaking (and they all eventually will) when they're pushed past their limit.

Mr. Busse did not offer an explanation in that thread. If he ever did offer an explanation, I didn't see it.

I don't think he owes anybody an explanation, however. Sufficient abuse will break any knife.

I think you're over-reacting Infi-del. You've been offered a lot of advice. Take the good with the bad and make a decision. We can't do anything but make suggestions and swap stories with you in a thread like this. ;)

Right... and I didn't ask you how I should use my knives. I asked for a knife that was like the SRK but better. You've been no help at all. When I want your advise on how to use a knife... I'll give it to you.
