Cold Steel SRK Carbon V

Perfect timing, I was just about to pick an SRK up as part of a kit.

Can someone school me on why the current sheaths they come with get such a bad reception?
The story is that the glass-reenforced plastic dulls the blades. I can say only that the used Carbon V SRK I bought here on The Exchange came with a hand-made Kydex sheath that didn't treat the edge nicely so I gave it away. I have only recently gotten the edge into the shape I need it to have. But I have heard of a guy in Hattiesburg that makes nice leather sheaths, so you might talk to him about something for your SRK.

Damn, I was really looking forward to that factory sheath being functional :( Just read a couple of dedicated BF threads about it and it doesn't seem limited to the SRK either.

Aparrently some examples are more egregious than others. Fingers crossed I get a not so bad one!

The SRK is totally not my usual style but somehow I am still drawn to it. My hultafors in SK5 steel has been a work horse.

The original sheath should look like my 1989 SRK below. I seem to remember that later ones had only one strap for the handle.

Mine came with a Cordura sheath with one strap sometime in the mid-90's. I didn't like that sheath, the strap easily popped over the guard and the knife could come out. So I ditched it for an Eagle sheath that was too big (made for a KA-BAR) before finally making my own leather sheath. I later realized how well the Buck 119 sheath fits and figured if I had to do it again, I'd just use one of those.

Though the benefit of making your own is you can make it so you can put it on without taking off your belt.

When I use the factory secure-ex sheaths on my Cold Steels, I always make sure that the edge doesn't hit the inside of the sheath.

For practical use, this is not always possible in the field.

Another option for the SRK would be the Spec Ops Combat Master Short (for 6in blades).
Lightweight, rugge, outside pocket (I keep a multi-tool in there) and can be worn without
passing through your belt.

Great recommendations, I’m getting one. I have a bunch of knives that would work with this sheath and was looking for something that would work on my plate carrier. 👍

Don’t forget, there is a mini-histroy SRK stickie at the top of this forum you might find interesting.

That’s a deep dive into the SRK. Great stuff, thanks

I recently acquired this beauty.

I received my (3V) SRK today and was prepared to hate the S-Ex sheath. After some careful fitting/re-fitting and review with a flashlight, I may have lucked out with a sheath that works as intended (assuming the intention is NOT to dull the blade). I like it.

Maybe the Taiwan produced sheaths are a cut above? I know the grind on the 3v version is nice and flat like the old Carbon V version.

I've always wondered about Cold Steel's 3v heat treat. After watching a bunch of reviews for the SK-5 steel I think I'm going to hold off for a 3v SRK.

That or some variation in the grind that leads to variation in blade height, IDK.
If you are interested in the 3V version, there are now FDE (like mine) and OD versions along with the Orange, and they are currently on sale.

$110 out the door on one popular website. That appears to be a fantastic deal! I have a FDE version headed my way😍! It'll be a perfect match for my multicam Spec Ops short Combat Master😉
