Does anyone have either of these knives? Looking for a good all around knife. I also will be carrying this knife on my LBV in the Reserves so I need a strong knife, with a good sheath that protects me as well as the knife(Kydex?), and can be carried upside down and set up for right or left handed use. Any others you care to mention? Thanks.

Okay, changed my other mind. Now, I'm looking real hard at the Busse Basic #5 with a Kydex sheath. They didn't have this knife on their site. Anybody have any comments on this knife. What is the Talon hole, just ahead of the grip for? Thanks again.

Before you make up your mind, look at a Fallkniven A-1. Good Luck

I've used the SRK (carbon V version), and I have the SOG Seal pup. Both are excellent knives for the price. The SRK does seem to rust pretty easily and is a little thick for my taste, but it is very convenient to use and tough as hell. I wouldn't worry about using it as a prybar any day. Not the greatest sheath, though, and if you want kydex, it must be custom made. The seal pup was my favorite general use knife for a few years. Excellent corrosion resistance, nice and compact, held an edge relatively well (especially considering the steel used was 440A). Probably one of the greatest water knife buys out there. For general cutting dutys, the serrations can get a little annoying, but they do there job well as rope cutters. The zytel handle feels kind of "cheap" and may start hurting your hand after constant usage. I did not care for the kydex sheath SOG provides (too tight), and actually prefered the original nylon one.

Alternatives? The Busse Basic #5 was my favorite general use knife hands-down for a while. Awesome INFI steel that just keeps cutting, greath handle (even when wet), fairly good corrosion resistance, decent kydex sheath. For its size, it was a fantastic chopper. Too bad I lost the bloody thing on a trip. @#%*&~!@#!!!!!! On the expensive side though.

Another great series of knives are the Fallkniven knives. The VG-10 steel they use has quickly become a favorite of mine. Great edge holding capabilities, handles are decent even when wet, great corrosion resistance and the leather sheaths are very well done. They also come with kydex sheaths as well, and I've heard good things about them. The F1 is currently my favorite general use fixed blade. I've used the A1 before and found it to be just as good as well as being a good chopper.

I like the Fallkniven A1 with black blade and Kydex sheath. Also, where can I find the Busse Basic #5? I haven't seen it on there web site. Thanks for the info. Any others?

There is a kydex sheath option available for the SRK. It is an ambidextrous sheat and can be utilized upside down.
The Busse basic #5 is a better multi-purpose knife, but the standard kydex sheath is one dimensional.
The Fallknivens (S1, A1) are very similar to the SRK, but of different steel and have an exposed tang for hammering. The standard kydex sheaths for the Fallknivens are identical to the Busse's.
For the money and the sheath carry options, the SRK is your best bet. Maybe $60 at the most.
The Fallknivens are very similar to the SRK in functionality, but with better steel (in some opinions). All are of thicker stock and will be tougher if used to dig/pry. The Fallkniven kydex sheath does not offer many carry options, however. Fallknivens go for around $100 at the most.
The Busse #5 will be the best all-around knife but will not be a good pry bar (but what knife is?).... Again the sheaths are one dimensional and the price is pretty steep.... around $165.
Of course, you can always get custom sheaths made....

Have you looked at the BM 140 series. I have had one for a year. It has been on my hip while working in the yard and while hunting. The ATS-34 blade holds a good edge. The current production sheath is right hand only, and looks like it could be used upside down. :) If you are wanting a sharp pry-bar M2 may be a better choice from what I have read. I bought a SRK right after they came out, I payed Cutlery Shoppe about as much for the sheath as I did the knife :( I can be sharpened like a razor, but the blade is so thick compared to its width that it has the blade geometry of a splitting wedge. ( makes a OK scaper). A friend of mine has the Seal Pup. Uses it on his boat and loves it. But 440A does not hold an edge like ATS-34 or tool steel.

I can't speak to which it tougher, but I can say I have an old SRK that stays in the back of my Jeep. Name something you can do with a knife....... and many you shouldn't. This one has done most of it. It looks like HELL, there is even a big gash out of the handle. It does rust a little easily, but cleans up easily as well and is easy to sharpen back to almost too sharp, with just about any stone I happen to have with me. Is it better than this one or that one? I have no idead. I just know that in about 6 years I haven't been able to do anything to this one other than make it ugly as hell. I've got others I like better, but well........ this is the one I KEEP in the Jeep all the time. Oh, and the sheath gave up a long time ago.

JT,
I have a BM 140, but I'm leary of it's strength. It's a nice knife, but seems a little light-duty. I love the feel of the grip and balance. It seems somewhat brittle, in ATS-34, so I've been thinking about the M2 model. Thanks for all the input.

Check out the SOG Northwest Ranger! It's 440A, pretty rust resistent, a nice size, light weight, great grip, and big enough to be a weapon if necessary!

I believe the Talon hole in the knife matches A hole in the sheath. This can be used to lock knife into sheath(padlock not included). I guess this is to keep the youngsters out at home. I wouldn't think this would be A useful feature in the field though. Brian

Another vote for the SRK.
I am not the greatest fan of Cold Steel, but this one is really good.

Riley, I have a SOG Seal Pup and am very pleased with the knife overall. I easily attached the sheath (cordura with a plastic lining) in a handle down position on my Treknology pack. The handle material holds up well to hard use even when wet.. I only paid $40 for it as well so that was a good selling point. I will probably have a kydex sheath made for this knife shortly.. SRK. I don't have much time now, so a quick post. I owned one for 2 years, used it HARD. It was my fave knife (before i started considering myself a "collector". It is extremely strong, very sharp and very cheap. What more can you ask for? Unfortunatly, My house was broken into recently and all my knives were stolen.

If you have more money look at the Fallkniven or the Busse, but for the price, go with the SRK.
