Cold Steel SRK Sheath - TIGHT!!!

Somebody may drive a cheap ass car, but that doesn't mean that you necessarily want to run cheap tires...

For all the headache of trying to remold the factory sheath and or trying to deal with GSM customer service, I would much sooner just pay $40 or $50 bucks for an aftermarket one that I don't have to screw with and that is actually enjoyable to use..

And regardless of the price of the knife, it's still only like $50 bucks were talking about here.. Should you have to? No, the factory sheath should be better but it is what it is..

People be posting knives on here everyday they drop $500+ on, but then the same people whine about the thought of having to drop $50 bucks on a sheath..

Last year I bought myself a Cold Steel Warcraft Tanto. I am very pleased with the knife, but the sheath it came with was way too tight. It was obvious that it was going to dull the blade as well as being very difficult to draw the knife out of the sheath. I had a friend make me a kydex sheath and am very pleased with how it turned out.

Try this with your sheath; when pushing on the thumb ramp to release the knife, only push on half the thumb ramp (the lower half of the thumb ramp). What this does is lightly separate the mouth of the sheath and the knife will slide out easily. I’ve had a number of CS sheaths with this problem. As soon as I figured out this trick, every single problem sheath that was tight became eminently useable

Thanx but it's not the handle locking into the sheath.
It looks like the blade geometry has changed since the blade change (smaller ricasso) from what I can gather. The Sheath has the same blade design as the old blade (larger ricasso). The blade is to wide where the belly curve straightens out and that's what is making it tight.

Hey all, thought I would update what GSM did warranty wise. I sent them the same pics explaining my thoughts and wanted to know if there are other sheaths available.
All I got in response was my warranty application was approved and because I live in Canada I will have to pay the customs fees.
I have zero issues with that.
What I wasn't expecting was a 2nd knife and sheath, that works as it should.

Took awhile but they made it more than right.
Thanx GSM / Cold Steel.

Edit: the young on the cake is it arrived on my kids birthday, so we have matching knives now. But I'll still need a sheath for the original, lol.

And here I thought GSM was incapable of doing anything right. I just spent an hour on the phone with them today (the 3rd time).

Short story: ordered a Cold Steel Master Tanto in 3v, Nightfall version about 6 weeks ago. I have the other two larger version and they are truly excellent. This one is on sale on the Cold Steel site at a great price so I buy it. The weeks tick by and not a word . I finally call them up and say hey, where’s my knife? Oh sorry, your order was canceled. Why, I ask? And how come you didn’t notify me and more importantly, why didn’t you credit me back my debit card? Never did get a satisfactory answer to those two basic questions

However, the supervisor I talk to says, well, someone messed up on this end and on the website, the SKU got messed up and it was for the sheaths only so we canceled your order but…if you want, we can still send you the knife now that we corrected the problem. Great I say.

Another 3 weeks go by and still nothing. I call them up today and they tell me, oh sorry, this knife has been discontinued. So I ask again, ok, why wasn’t I notified and again, why wasn’t I issued a refund?

Ok, the woman says, would you like a refund? Yes, I do!!! Ok she says, it’s going to take 30 business days to APPROVE the refund since it’s a warranty issue and maybe a few weeks after that to issue the refund. I say, what warranty issue?! I never even received anything!!! She says, I’m sorry, that’s the best I can do. I promptly hung up and called my bank to open a charge dispute and had the money back in my account in a few hours . I’ll let my bank handle this. I’m astounded at the way things are being run at Cold Steel these days since they got taken over. Sorry OP for the thread hijack but be thankful you actually got something from these knuckleheads.

If you feel comfortable to spend $500 , then another $50 is probably not going to hurt .

If you choose to buy a $35 knife , investing another $50 may not be in the budget .

I've yet to feel like I needed to replace a Cold Steel sheath . Takes only a few minutes to heat and mod a sheath ...never got any headaches .

I'd return the knife first , most likely , unless I got it discounted deeply enough to buy a replacement sheath .

My SRK sheath’s retention was just right, but I can see how it could be tighter on other units. Glad GSM helped you with that.

Otherwise, if customer service didn’t push through, I think the SRK is a fine enough knife to get a decent leather sheath for. It is one of the classic proven CS designs.

Don’t think that’s a hijack at all and we should discuss both good and bad feedback. That sucks, dude.

There is a taper inside the SRK sheath that may help stop the blade edge from making contact. If the sheath is heated and re-formed with the knife blade, you may inadvertently spread and disable this feature.

Owned my SRK for maybe one, two years now? No tight problems so far. Retention is just right. If your SRK is too tight outta the box, that’s definitely not normal and should be returned/exchanged.
