Cold Steel SRK

The Marble Plainsman or the Loveless Marble Drop Point Hunter are pretty close to what I am looking for but still no cigar. The blade length is short of the 6 inches specified.

I wrote Cold Steel and expressed my concern about images I found on the web concerning SRK and Trailmaster knives that were used on deer bone or chopping tests. Yesterday they replied. Here is the reply in entirety..,

"Anytime you use an extremely sharp knife to chop through bone, especially a pelvis, you run the risk of damaging the edge. Hacking through large animal bone is better done with a hatchet (due to its differential heat treatment) or with a saw. Those tools are designed for that type of job more so than a knife."

By their own words. :) The goal is to reduce weight, not add weight by adding a hatchet to my load. Sometimes I have a hatchet or a saw with me and sometimes I don't. The comment about differential heat treatment is the key I suspect. I think I need to give Swamp Rat a call and see if they have something midway between the Howling Rat and the Swamp Rat in size.

You could get yourself a Victorinox Hunter (locking blade) SAK to go with your fixed blade knife for hunting. The SAK’s wood saw is excellent for opening the pelvis, or you could use the long slim blade to core out the anus. The Hunter also has a nice gutting blade for opening up the belly.

AFAIK, the SRK and the Becker CU/7 are from the same steel, and it is excellent. The Becker is very neutral in it's weighting, making it a lousy chopper. If you are looking for a Combat Utility knife, it's very, very good. With the low price, it's outstanding. If you are looking for a camping knife, the SRK is a much smaller and lighter package, and gets my nod.

Thanks for the link. I certainly like the BK7 sheath. Too bad the blade is too "military" (i.e., clip point) in appearance and it is right at the 7" prohibited size. On the other hand the BK2 looks pretty good. Why couldn't they offer that with a BK7 type sheath? My hunt would probably be over if they did. Does anyone know how the BK2 stacks up against a Howling Rat in the field?

superc,
The BK10 sounds like it fits what you are looking for.....

The kydex lined, nylon sheath, with the shorter blade and less aggressive blade profile. Its also ALOT lighter.....and cheaper ;)

Hey, that is good. Thanks. But since you do work for them, a question remains. Does the BK10 sheath fit the BK2, and is that available as a combo?

superc,
No, the stock thickness of the BK2 is greater than the BK10. The BK10 is a newer design, and it has its own sheath.

There is a lot of temptation there, but I still prefer the BK2 and would probably get it (and maybe more than one), if it had an ALICE compatible sheath like the BK7 and BK10 do. It is a shame such isn't available. I am too lazy to sew my own sheath. Ideally instead of ALICE hooks the sheath would have clips like those on the Bianchi UM series holsters or the last M-16 bayonet sheath. I don't see myself as crushing many skulls with a knife butt in the future, so the hammer on the tang of the BK10 becomes extra weight that would be ground off. I agree the point of the BK10 is less agressive, but it is still too agressive for some politically correct people.
Hmm, if the stock thickness of the BK2 is greater (as in blade thickness), then the BK2 is probably a stronger knife. Or do you mean edge to spine thickness?

Yes, the BK2 is stouter it is also thicker behind the edge making it a little less useful. The BK10 is the right choice.
The Ontario TAK is one you might consider also and there is always the Master Hunter by Cold Steel.

I think the Cold Steel Master Hunter is a VERY good fixed blade. I've used one for hunting deer, small game and around camp for about 8 years now. I love Carbon V, it takes a wicked edge & holds it, flat grind ( with distal taper ) slices like crazy, the handle doesn't slip when it get's wet, it's got good balance. It's my favorite hunting knife. p.s. just keep the blade oiled a little :D
