"Never bring a knife to a gunfight. Unless it's a CQB." Or something like that.
Anyway, I own the Cold Steel Recon Tanto, and a friend owns the CS Master Tanto. Both seem to be tough blades. I've used mine for a little bit of chopping, and it's held up pretty well. As far as defense is concerned, I'm lucky to say I've never had to find out, but I do trust it.
From a technical standpoint, I'm sure someone else here is better qualified to compare the two, but I think both the Tanto & Recon Tanto are good bets.
Though I really like(d) my (now disappeared) Recon Scout, I just love the looks of the CQB. I haven't handled one, so I can't say if it feels as good as it looks...
