Cold Steel Trail Master SMIII Review Part 2

I've always liked the Trailmaster, have the Carbon V version. It is a light and fast bowie for its size, and a pretty good cutter to boot.

What would you all say is the biggest difference between the SMlll and the Carbon V, made in Cali (but steel from Japan I believe).? Thanks for the help.

I've got a Trailmaster in Carbon V which I've really only tested on a old huge stump in my backyard. My impression is that it's a great chopper. I just wish the sheath were Kydex rather than leather. [ I wonder if there's somebody out there who makes a kydex sheath for the Trailmaster? ]
One of my knife buying regrets is that I didn't pick up the CS Recon Scout when it was still available in Carbon V. I'll probably eventually buy it in the SK5 version, the San Mai model is a little more than I care to spend.

Hello Jason welcome to the Blade Forums.

If I had to state the biggest differences between these two it would be that the Carbon V knife is made of high carbon steel, manufactured in the US, and has a factory V ground edge or cantled edge setup.

The SMIII knife is made currently in Japan, is a laminated stainless steel and the edge is hand convexed.

The steel difference makes sharpening and overall maintenance a bit different as well. The carbon steel tends to sharpen a bit easier, but will accumulate rust much faster if neglected. Either knife is a good choice.

Thanks to everyone for your comments.
