Cold Steel Ultimate Hunter for 2015 in CTS XHP steel and G10

Was trimming off some leather on a sheath I am making, and the sun was coming through the kitchen window just right, I wanted my daughter to try and record this but she wasn't around so I put the camera on a tripod and tried to shoot and shave at the same time ;) The blade takes a really nice sharp edge, the hairs literally pops offs off the arm! As you can kinda see, I'm just lightly moving the knife across my arm, pretty much tree top cutting the hairs.

"Thanks Eric, but, it's just paper, you give them paper, they give you a knife... of course that paper can be hard to come by, but a small jar and a couple dollars a day add up quickly"

Hi Gary, looks like you are trying to infect another man with your steel virus:).
Looks like the hair on your arm are jumping off in fear before the blade even reaches them, never seen hair flying off like that.Nice video.
And yes Sir, you have the right to bare arms:D:thumbup:

I will admit it freely, I am an enabler ;)

and yes, the hairs were definitely afraid and took off almost before the edge could even get there, the lighting made it easier to see, I had made a swath before when I noticed that effect so by the time I had the camera setup, my field of standing hair was not the same, but, you can still see how well it did.

Thanks guys, wife's still mad, go figure ;) I did take some sand paper to the Ultimate Hunter name and it's clean now, took a while, tried to keep from messing up the other grind below but it did scratch that a little, so I'd warn you guys to be careful if you try to do that.

I took her out for a walk, here's a quick shot, tree is pretty well beaten up by wood peckers in our area;

You can see how I sanded off the billboard on the side there, took a while but cleaner now.

that 4Max should be mighty impressive, but then, so is this one. I used it a bit over the long weekend here, mainly whittling some wood and opening packages, with it's thin blade grind, it cut very well and maintained it's edge too, one solid knife right here!

Gary, thanks for the review. I'll have to possibly check one of these out. Maybe I'll get the chance at Blade. I still have both the Tuff Lite and Mini Tuff Lite based on your review thread of those knives. They are perfect EDC/whittling/work knives. Keep up the great reviews, brother. :thumbup:

Nice review Gary! Loving mine and the XHP is fantastic on this one! I am a choil man so I added one to my UH! Very sweet knife!

Nicely done there! and I'm still very impressed with the blade steel they used here. I haven't gotten the urge to modify that blade profile yet, like it as she sits, and guys at work were amazed at it's sharpness too.

Good question, I don't have one to do a direct comparison, some of our professors out there might be able to provide at least a molecular comparison, but it always comes down to;

Heat treat

Edge profile

Sharpening method

Ability of the person cutting, some people, ya just can't fix crazy ;)

im liking this ultimate hunter,,even though i dont hunt, looks like a great edc piece. thanks for the review gary.

Yep, not a hunter either, so it's more used in an EDC even though folks may view it as a bit too large for such a thing, but it carries pretty well in the pocket without much trouble.

I would say that the blade shape almost seems more suited to bushcraft type work, since a lot of knives designed for that purpose seem to have a similar drop point pattern.

I was using this a bit today, chamfering corners on some blocks of wood, sliced neatly and cleaning along the ends ;) very sharp knife right here!

Well guys, home on vacation today, feels like Saturday actually ;) and decided to trim down the spine of this folder somewhat, to a more pointy look, I like it and closed it still looks and feels good too. While the original point design I'm sure must have been meant for some heavy duty prying maybe? I don't see that this mod would make it less sturdy, but it is able to penetrate better, into whatever material.

Here's some shots taken this morning;

While I'm not really setup for grinding, no belt sander, I have a flat disk sander that I used to SLOWLY take the metal down to this clip pointed version, DIPPING into cool water FREQUENTLY !!! to help keep the steel from over heating.

Your modification makes the knife look so much better. The lack of a useable point was the only thing I disliked about the knife; I might have to get it anyway and do your modification.
