What do you think about the Cold Steel Urban Dart? Which is the purpose of that particular design? Mainly for stabbing?

Cold Steel's discrition says:
The Urban Dart is our rendition of a similar knife the late Bob Engnath designed over twenty years ago. With elegantly simple lines and an economy of purpose, the Urban Dart is reminiscent of our Spike series but with a few differences.
The blade represents a huge advance for Cold Steel in knife making technology. We have spent literally years trying to find a way to satisfactorily manufacture this type of blade. Ultimately our factory in Japan developed a method to drop forge successfully the triangular cross section this knife required. With the addition of precision hollow grinding, superlative polishing, and highly skilled hand sharpening, we were able to produce at last this lethally wicked blade.
The simple teardrop shaped Kraton handle is small and thin. It gives extra traction to the fingers and protects the palm when the knife is used like a push knife or when using palm reinforced grip styles.
The Urban Dart comes with a Secure-Ex sheath and steel bead lanyard chain so it can be easily worn as a neck knife or be tucked, taped or lashed just about anywhere.

But: with the word Dart in the name, I would think it was designed as a throwing blade. Great for those covert deanimation activities when you can't sneak up too close to the bad guy/mad zombie...

They have been coming out with some crazy things, like this dart & the brooklyn smasher bat, that south african plastic whip, i wonder if they are going to resurrect the ballistic knife ?

Iam actually very interested in thise knife. It is the only design they have put out that i like. It would make a good last ditch stabbign implement but in general it wouldnt be very useful. Plus the law tends to frown on things like this being carried on ones personage.

I just had my first close call with this nasty spike.
I've been carrying it around my neck on and off for a few days ( I have the good sense NOT to do so in bed) . So yesterday I was assembling some bathroom shelving unit for my housemate. You know, a kit you slap together with a screw-driver. OK, so I'm bending down a bit, getting up,back down to kneel and work etc.
At one point I got up and stood upright and was saying something to her and then I looked down to my feet and I noticed something strange poking through my shirt. Yup! the point of the unsheathed Urban Dart.It was laying at my waist pointing to the left. My jaw dropped! I grabbed it through my shirt, and retreived it without further incident. Now imagine if I hadn't noticed it and then maybe bent down to pick something up off the floor. Ouch! Instant Shish Kabob. It turns out that the handle may have become pinched between the shirt and my belly or something like that when I was bending down and when I stood up- the Urban Dart may have become unsheathed. After inspecting the sheath carefully, I came to the conclusion that for neck wear, the blade lock tension is too loose- requiring very little effort to remove the blade-, so I heated it with a hair drier and pinched it in to make it tighter. Now I consciously check the blade before I bend down! The last thing I need is to impale myself with a $60 spike!
Cold Steel ought to take a closer look at how that blade may come out by accident- under a shirt or with bending motions! Gulp!
NOTE: Cold Steel has indeed changed the tension of the sheath lock on the Urban Dart Sheath. It is now much tighter and between 9/06 and 3/07 I haven't had a single accidental unsheathing of the Urban Dart. Kudos to the CS's CS and diligent retooling:thumbup: . One mishap could have put a serious dent in Cold Steel's wallet!;)

Your lucky dude ! I gotta say here , the idea of 'neck knives' is not the brightest idea in the world.... Keeping a razor sharp , pointed piece of steel near vital organs and major veins ???

I'll keep mine in my pocket or on my belt.

I gotta agree. I'm especially wary of those ones in a friction fit plastic sheath that hang upside down. Seems like a field ripe for litigation.

I have carried a neck knife every day for nearly 4 years now ( and often before that) and you learn to trust your equiptment- If a knife seems to fall out of the sheath then I stop carrying it or make a sheath that works better. In that time I have never had an incident where anybody was in danger of getting cut from it and I get hurt more often with a fixed blade on my belt poking me every time I bend over/ twist.

But then again I am wierd

For Chrissake...Moodino, you gotta be more careful. Besides that, CS wants $119.99 for this? If you have any experience with grinding or heating, you can make one out of a $30 epee blade or a $9 triangular file. The Urban Dart is a nice overpriced piece of work. You can get the same effect with a screwdriver.

More careful for sure. I paid $60 + shipping. I'm not a knife maker and have no tools around me anymore.I realise that the effect can be had by modifying any ordinary screwdriver but if you haven't seen the grind in person- you ought to have a look at it. It's more sophisticated than just a triangular grind. I'm sure glad I didn't get to find out at the expense of my belly!

I've gotta say, Cold Steel drives me crazy sometimes. The last thing I want to see is a knife company advertizing the "lethally wicked blade" that its product sports. That's the kind of language that overzealous legislators cite to the public before drafting anti-knife laws.

SpyderNoir, I understand your concerns. But in the end, we can make a knife out of anything. I don't see how anybody can regulate anything. You're only governed by the regulations you choose to acknowledge, and by what you get caught carrying. If it comes down to me carrying a sharpened stick, then that's what I will do.

If it comes down to that i dotn know what id do but it very well might involve explosives. I dont mean to be scary or overtly aggresive iwht that statement. But if it gets to that point, id rather go down fighting than be controlled. Break my back you wont break me :barf:

I agree too. Seems awkward and potentially dangerous to me. It might be useful sometimes I can imgaine, but when you might just as well carry it on your belt, or in a pocket, why bother?

News Update. The Polymer Jungle Dart fits the Urban Dart sheath PERFECTLY! What a cool idea. A steel spike and trainer / covert EOD polymer version for ONE sheath

Urban Dart UPDATE. I've been wearing it every day for 3 months now, without a single mishap with an accidental release from the sheath. It appears that the slight modification I made three weeks ago to the retainer lock's tention was just perfect. I highly recomend this blade. It fast draws faster and more ergonomically than anything else I've ever tried. Cold Steel need to sell the sheaths separately though.
NEWS FLASH- Cold steel are now shipping extra sheaths at $11.00 plus shipping. The benefits are obvious, multiple sheath mountings make quick changes of blade location a breeze plus, we finally have a dedicated sheath for the Jungle dart- making training and non ferrous deployment a reality.
