Okay so I ordered a Cold Steel Catalog and the video came with. I watched it of course, and I just don't get why they would make a video like that. I kinda like a few of there knives, but I really don't care if it will cut meat... Or pierce a hood, or hack through a 2x4, or cut a hanging rope... I could give a rip less about that!!! I wanna know how long the knife will hold an edge when cutting cardboard, or paper, or any other everyday tasks. The video just seems pointless to me, and all that meat they whacked at, jesshhhh. :jerkit:

What do you guys think about the :jerkit: video?

The knives are promoted for self-defence, so cutting meat seems fairly straight forward, the larger blades are also choppers like the Trailmaster hence the 2x4 cut, the hemp rope hanging cut is a test of sharpness used by many, Cold Steel is just showing their knives can do it to. They pretty much introduced the door stab to promote their tanto point.

The video just seems pointless to me ...

It, like the Ginzu commercials was also meant for mass appeal to a non-knife public.

If you do a search you will find that this topic has been gone over many times.

As far as I am concerned the More Proof DVD is a bunch of hype, but hype is a proven way to promote a product. I'm sure the DVD appeals to a great many of its intended audience.

The DVD is just to prove that the cold steel knives are good knives.:)
The larger knives like the Trailmaster is about the best knife a man can get IMO. The grind , grip and balance is so good that it is hard to believe that this knife is sold so cheep. I have many high end knives and very few of them can match the Trailmaster. The older shiny Carbon V is the best model available and there is no reason paying more to get a San mai version. The San Mai version is a bit more heavy and has a rolled edge.
If you don't have a Trailmaster get one ASAP and you will know what I am talking about. Best way to get a older shiny carbon V version is on E-bay.:D And if you don't like it you can always resell it in a flash for about the same you paid.

Trailmaster is king of the 9" knives.:grumpy:

PS I use my knives they are not just safe Queens.

Cheers,

André

They are all fine knives but non of them has the rubber kreton grip like the Cold steel.

That rubber grip makes the knife ultra fast in the hand and you always have a firm grip when coverd in blood or other weet invitroment.

That's a good thing.

I have seen a Trailmaster slip out of the hand due to sweat and project forward through the woods like a big dart. Kraton also wears quickly with use and will even come loose from the handle.

My Carbon Trailmaster is very old and the handle is doing fine, I know that they can come loose but hay it is only a $100 knife!!!

All that I am saying is that they are way better then most knives that cost way more.

Here is a little back and side action of the big 6 collection

André

Cold Steel makes one thing; Videos. The company "Cold Steel" is a marketing company. They do their job very well, but they actually market a very good product for the most part. They are living proof that you don't have to be in the favor of knife efficienados or on public forums to sell knives.

Their knives are made in many instances in the same places as other high quality knives; like A.G.Russell's knives made in Japan for example. The made in the USA knives from CS are quality made by Camillus and the steel is quite good in those with the Carbon V steel. Most of their stainless is fine for user blades and gives the users very little trouble. I've personally had great luck with Cold Steel knives I've bought and less warranty issues with them than any other company I buy from including but not limited to Spyderco, Buck, Kershaw, Gerber and Ka-Bar. In my opinion they hold their own even if they do make funny videos. :D If you think they are just promoting hype buy one of their Ultimate Hunter folders for just over $50. It will shut you up but quick. Compare what you get there from any other company apples to apples. For the money it is one of the best knives I bought in all of 05.

The RD9 is the same price, the Becker Bowie is ~$60, neither of those handles are coming off, both have solid tool steel blades and the RD9 is even custom made.

"They are all fine knives but non of them has the rubber kraton grip like the Cold steel."

The SR battle rat has the resiprene C handle that has all the good points of Kraton and is much more tough and chemical resistant. And micarta is also vastly superior to kraton in toughness and chemical resistance. I would pick micarta or Res C any day over kraton.

i like the cs trailmaster and recon scout.while the proof dvd may be hype, what i'd like to know is can other knives do that shit and is it made up cowpies or can any cs knife off the shelf do that?leave out L T being an a hole or not

How much does one of those battle rat cost?
Sounds like a great knife. How is the grind on that model.

They will not guarantee it, and you void your warrenty if you try to find out. As with all blade tests, it is pretty much impossible to judge the performance without a reference blade, you have no way of being able to judge the performance. On a simple wood chop for example, if you cut through the wood fast and the knife stays sharp does it mean the knife is ground well and the steel high quality or just that the wood is really soft and the user skilled, there is no way to tell.

Okay, my 2 cents on Cold Steel:

Observation - I'm confident that most medium - higher end stuff with any blade geometry will perform a lot of the tests on the Proof video however, there is a LOT of technique involved in some of the demos. A Spyderco in the hands of Lynn Thompson would likely produce similar results.

Opinion - 1) That having been said, I have in my arsenal mostly Benchmade, Spyderco and Cold Steel. Cold Steel has never sent me a knife that wasn't FREAKING sharp out of the box. They excel in that area way more than Benchmade and about the same as Spyderco in my experience.
2) Cold Steel knives for the most part have GREAT edge geometry. They do have some thick clunky fixed blades, but even some of the thick, heavy stuff (i.e. Trailmaster, Recon Scout) are fully flat ground with nice wide blades and they cut like crazy. They are in my opinion much easier to re-sharpen than the Beckers too.

Gripe - 1) I think Cold Steel makes a great product for a very reasonable price, and I like their in-your face, politically incorrect marketing. But - why don't they have a better warranty? How hard would it be to warranty their stuff for life like so many others, especially if they tout how tough and enduring they are????? I don't know.
2) Cold Steel folders routinely have the crappiest pocket clips I've ever seen regardless of the model. They are too small, and too tight. I usually have to remove them and pry on them for a while to get them to fit my clothes like Benchmades, Spydercos and Kershaws seem to right out of the box.

All in all I'm impressed with Cold Steel. I have personally tested and compared many of their knives with comparable Benchmade and Spydercos, and more often than not the Cold Steel will out cut and out last the edges on the others for a cheaper price. However, I still have to find the PERFECT knife.......

The battle rat knives look like good knives BUT they have no Guard and when stabbing hard or doing other tasks the hand can come in contact with the blade. I like a good guard on a knife and can not undestand why NON of the knives from Swamp rat knives have no guard??? I know that it easier to make a knife without but stil???

Most of them have a guard, it however isn't a dual guard such as on the Trailmaster, it is more prominent on some knives that others, the Ratweiler's guard for example stands out more than the guard on the Howling Rat. Some people do prefer much larger guards, Fowler for example has really large guards on his knives but on other ABS knives built for the same kinds of purposes have much smaller or no guards at all.
