I can't be the only one who finds these videos to be pointlessly funny can i?

Random husky middle aged guys just chopping the crap out of random items with knives that are probably sharpened more than factory sharp. They're always worth a good chuckle.

Cold Steel does in fact make some decent knives if you ask me. They also make knives that confuse me. (I wonder if there's really a market for some)

What do you guys think of their videos and their product offerings?

I own a lot of Cold Steel stuff...their knives(not machetes, swords, or tomahawks though) come INCREDIBLY sharp out of box, so nah, I really, really doubt they're sharpened more than factory sharpness.

I don't really pay their videos much mind(they don't offend me like they do some people), but they make a good product and that's good enough for me. And they make a wide mix of stuff, too. You can get some practical EDC knives, or you get the megafolders, you can get classic machete patterns like the panga and bolo, or you can bring out your inner low budget ancient warrior and go with a katana or gladius machete, you can get hawks and hatchets which are fully functional woods tools, or you can get swords and warhammers and polearms, you can get a good large fixed blade camp knife, or you can get double edged fighting daggers, just a wide variety of stuff that no matter what your tastes in blades are, there should be SOMETHING that works for you among their selection.

OP, The only part of your post I'll comment on is the sharpness. Every single cold steel knife I've ever owned was sharp as a mudfooter out of the box. They are some of the sharpest factory edges I've ever seen.

I definitely find them fun/funny. I think they're a throwback to a time when marketing and advertising was overly sensationalist, the movie trailer voice-over guy is my favorite part. Cold steel harkons back to the 80's and I think some of the marketing choices of Lynn Thompson do too. From a time when you had to be excited enough to straight up mail order your knife.

I think people that are somehow ''offended'' by that stuff are taking life and knives waay too serious. And some of the critics laughing at Cold steel are the same guys that drop $550 on a Strider with a $150 skull bead and only take it out to cut paper because THAT is a real tactical operator's choice of kit.

More funny for me is fake military past for marketing purposes. ;)

For me thinking that CS videos are 100% serious is some kind of mental illness.

The videos are a hoot! Lynn should really have hired an add agency. That said they do produce some good models and any cold steel I've bought came out ofbthe box SHARP.

I like them. They are living my inner child's dream. Hacking meat and making cool stuff.

The only thing I dont like is when they chop balsa wood or cardboard bad guys. Every single thin metal thing can do that.

They produce a lot of different models and I think some lower end ones are good value.

I also like this guy a lot.

I never actually use a factory edge. I rebevel every knife before I carry it. Factory edge doesn't define a knife's capabilities. Besides, as previously noted already CS does factory edges well too.

And yes, the videos are probably not targeted towards you if you don't find them appealing. :D

How do we know it's not the ad agency's idea for LT to make those vids?

Stumbled on a video by Winkler knives. Guess how they were showing the knives performance? Cutting hanging rope and stabbing a poor old Honda Civic to death. The hanging pig is really over the top but CS supposedly uses the meat.

Good point! Note to Lynn.....fire add agency.

The videos may be cheesy, but I would be willing to believe they use the factory edge. Cold Steel knives come from the factory with a better edge than any I have seen from any other production knife.

I don't like everything has to offer, but if you need a lot of knife for the money, and find a CS product you like the look of you can buy in confidence. They are a great knife.

Good Lord! Everything in that picture makes me cringe:eek:

It's like zombie apocalypse meets 70's hair band.....with knives...

BB is right, it's so obviously off the wall you have to wonder is Lynn is rolling around laughing his a$$ off at people that take it serious?

Dunno about that...CS seems to be selling a lot of knives. Both to people who care about the product and to those who just want to buy into the marketing.

As I said earlier, if you don't find the vids impressive, then you probably aren't part of the market the vids are targeted at. LT seems to be a pretty savvy businessman, I'm sure he has lots of tools to find out what kind of effect the vids have on his sales.

That guy is like Conchita Wurst, american edition. :D

I must admit, the videos are certainly entertaining.

Marketing has always been Cold Steel's strong suite.

I agree. I have owned well over 40 CS knives over the years and every single one has been one of the sharpest knives out of the box. Only Spyderco matches them in sharpness.

As for Videos, that is called advertising and believe me, it sells knives. They can be funny, but to the average consumer it works and I see nothing wrong with it.

Cold Steel's videos are for entertainment purposes. It's their marketing angle. They do make good knives. I own several of them, but are their knives better than the host of other quality knives by other manufacturers? I don't think so. In the last 20 years or so that I've been carrying and using knives, I've never had to subject any of my knives to the absurd torture that those Cold Steel videos portray. I use my knives to cut things with. Stuff that you would cut with on an everyday basis. If I need a hammer, I use a hammer. If I need a prybar, I use a prybar. And believe it or not, some days I don't even get to use the knife in my pocket, but it's nice to know it's there in case I need it. I own a bunch of knives from various manufacturers, and all of them perform when I need them to. To think that Cold Steel is the end all and be all of knives based on what they portray in their videos is naive.

I think your right....Lynn does seem to be a pretty savvy business man. You don't get where he's at by being stupid. That said I just can't believe people like the vids for anything but entertainment, but point taken I'm not part of the market the vids are targeted to.
I really do like some of his knives.....code 4 very slim yet heavy duty and the tuff lite is a great little knife. Also really want to try the Swift.
