Cold Steel Voyager steel type

I have a Cold Steel Voyager w/ tanto point from the mid to late 1990s. The type of steel used is not stamped on the blade, only "Cold Steel" and "Made in Japan".

Am I correct in assuming Cold Steel was using AUS-8A in this era.....or would it be VG1?

It's AUS8A. Cold Steel didn't start using VG-1 until 2006.

I have 1 Voyager that says VG-1 Rest are AUS8A

Here's a starting point to figure out when your knife was made and with what kind of steel:

Usually if it is made of VG-1, SM-3 or anything other than AUS-8A, it will likely be on the blade.
