Cold Steel vs. Emerson

I really wanted Emerson, some simple design, as I mentioned Mini A-100, mini or regular CQC-7A etc. But that lock issue for $200? My 913 Stryker from Benchmade is 7 years old, and lock [ti liner lock just like in Emerson] is as solid as it was new [in some part because that innovative stop pin which can be regulated]. It seems that lock fail in Emerson is more possible than breaking blades in Cold Steel. :(

CS has a new model coming out called the 62RM 4-MAX (odd name) at Knifeworks, and has 20CV! Uh, we could have a contenda here if CS is putting out knives with supersteels!

I think the lock failure issue was quietly addressed. I sent in a 2012 8 that had lockup problems and they replaced the lock side liner with the current thicker one.

@KOD

My target is new Lawman

Or Hold Out II CTS-XHP if not Emerson. Smaller III is nice too.

Yeah, but on the market are some used Emersons even from 2000.

Not sure how I failed to comment on this thread when it first came out. I agree with Panta above where he has Cold Steel the winner in all categories of comparison. I will say that I like many of Emerson's designs but the most ripped off I've ever felt in a quarter century of knife collecting was by my purchase of a CQC 11 with a blade that was so off centre it scuffed the liner every time I opened and closed the knife. Of course a Cold Steel thread wouldn't be complete without someone mentioning how much they hate Lynn Thompson...well that's the way I feel about Ernie Emerson. He should shove his smug claims about "American exceptionalism" the same place where many would urge me to shove a claim of " Canadian exceptionalism" were I silly enough to have that point of view.

It seems that chinese Emersons from KAI have better lock, because stainless liners?
Not the one I had.

I had picked up a CQC 7k to see if I would like the wave and thumb disk. It developed major up and down play after three days, even with forcing the lock bar to almost touching the scale side.

It served it's purpose though. I now have a Mini CQC 15 in my pocket.

Then it's worthless for me... Emerson mini A-100 with triadlock would be for me grail knife for now.

It's not the type of lock that is at fault here. It's in the execution. Lots of perfectly functional liner locks around. If you get a "triad lock" copy then its secure lock-up still depends on it being manufactured properly.

I know. I've liner lock in Spyderco Starmate 440V, BM Dark Star and BM 913 and it's all well done.

If Emerson did the linerlocks on the productions like the customs lockbars there would never have been this issue in the first place with crappy locks. Every single Emerson I have had (with the exception of my custom) the lock has failed on my on at lest two separate occasions. If you want an Emerson without the crappy lock, blade grind, soft heat treat and outrageous price just buy the Emerson ZT collaboration they are everything EKI could have been. And this is coming from a hardcore Emerson fanboy too.....

ZT are visually ok, especially that with CQC-8/Horseman blade, but:

1) I like more simple design without Emerson wave - CQC-7/A-100/Viper series. For me better wave is in CS with that thumb disc.
2) weight is big: ~175 grams, even "real" Emerson CQC7 is little too heavy - 145 grams and 82 mm blade. 145 g is upper limit.
3) I like that idea with no torx in folding knife, just simple screws

Dream Emerson EDC for now:

But it's expensive custom.
