if they did a 9" panang, 4-5" urban kukri, 7" camp /w spear point, with their recon tanto handle all in carbon V with a kydex sheath.:D

and dropped some of the knock offs.
:barf:

I am sending a letter to Lynn.

I can't stand it any more.

Well just two questions why do you want a 4-5" urban kukri I have handled a 6" kukri and consider it useless as the blade is to short for any coping task. As fore panang first Cold Steel has recently released a machete second 9" is defiantly too short a 18-20" would be much better.

:p

I would respect them more if...

1. They used a better steel than 8a most of the time.
2. Dropped the 420 steel series rubbish
3. Dropped the we make the best knives in the world crap...
4. Came back to Bladeforums
5. Stopped claiming 8a beat CPM 440V, ATS-34 et al:rolleyes:
6. Offered a Carbon V Tai Pan.
7. Dumped those triple action things, yuck!:p
8. Made some G10 scales knives!
9. Stopped claiming the Americanised Tanto was the best blade tip:rolleyes:

al polkowski makes an urban kukri and so does black cloud knives they are awesome.

come to think of it emerson commander is really close to a kukri.

plus I had a mini tourist one from northern india which would be an great utility/backup.

They'd go up a notch in my eye if they would start using a Carbon V option for ALL of their fixed and folder knives. There are lots of cool designs from Cold Steel, they just wanna offer them in steels that do not perform the way Carbon V does.

Just think, all of those new 2000-2001 designs in Carbon V! :D

The Cold Steel Special Projects catalogue I have is rife with marketing language straight out of a used car salesman's mouth. However, there is no denying the fact that they do make excellent knives for the price...just wish they'd tone down the hype a bit.

The only part of the entire Cold Steel catalogue that really interested me were the two pages describing their 'Willow leaf saber' (which is actually an Oxtail Saber), their Chinese broadsword, the O-Tanto, Wakizashi, Katana and Kogarasu-maru. I own the differentially hardened version of the Cold Steel katana, and I can attest to its quality for the price.

Another thing, the whole tanto point B.S. is just that - B.S.. I'm primarily a collector of swords and the japanese tanto is RARELY shinogi-zukuri in shape, let alone shaped like most of the tanto shown in the catalogue. Only the Hamidashi series and the O-Tanto (grouped in the 'swords' section) are traditionally shaped tanto...the rest of the other 'tanto' are part of a fad that has yet to die out.

Hay personally I want to see: a Recon 1 with 4.5-5" blade and Carbon V option. A Vaquero Grande with a plain edge in Carbon V with Teflon coating. Safe Keeper II with a Teflon coating. Trail Masters could do with a Teflon coating as well. A choice of sheath cold com useful e.g. I want a SRK but have no need for a bulky and noisy plastic sheath but a low profile lever would be perfect for me.

There is more but I'm too tired to write it all.

1) I don't mind 8A if Carbon V is offered too.
2) Agreed. There's no excuse for this, at least give us 440a with a good heat treat. It's cheap and works great when SOG does it.
3) If they keep making great hard use knives, they should by all means keep bragging about it, IMHO :)
4) YES
5) YES
6) If they do, I'll take 10.
7) Thats the next folder on my list, actualy. They are pretty sturdy.
8) Couldn't hurt.
9) Lynn seems to go through phases every year. One year it's tantos, one year it's khuks. One year it's daggers. I like this approach, to a point, cause lynn thomson doesn't seem to make a knife unless he can write an article on why it's the best at something. It kind of prevents boring knives.

My biggest gripe with CS is the 420 thing. Any other steel I could live with. If they want to be cheap, they could use 1095 or something. Proven, reliable, if high maintainance, steel. 420 is the last thing I'd pick.

My biggest "like" is their willingnes to make crazy, specialized things (fighting shovels, boar spears, the torpedo, etc.) Few knife companies have that much guts.

There was a time when Cold Steel caught my attention with their products, but now I'm not too impressed by their offerings. Recently, I was dissapointed when I saw them offer Swiss Army type ripoffs.
I still like most of their products, but I too wonder why the seem so stuck on AUS-8 and Zytel for most of their folders.

Totally agree, the sheath for my Recon Tanto appears to be cardboard with nasty black fabric stuck on it.
I am still considering the SRK and Recon Scout. Some pretty good values in the Cold Steel line up.
Cheers,
Gord.

y'all gotta lotta good points. I currently own and carry (2) of the 420 series of knives: The oyabun and the spike.
I'm a poor tech student with an out-of-control addiction to knives;)
However, I chose the oyabun because it is extremely light and fast, and hey I'll admit it, I got girly arms... It was at a price I won't cry over if something happens to it, while I definitely wouldn't select it for "rugged use-type situations", It's a light knife good for carryin' around the dubious part of town I live in. Oh yeah, the spike (tanto) is just last-ditch and fun!
I do however totally agree with y'all's review of Cold Steel! :D

I'd like Cold Steel a lot more if they were still making their version of the Vietnam Tomahawk -- Probably just as good as, but most definitely more saneley priced than the currently available version from the American Tomahawk Company... I've always liked that design but not enough to part with US$130(!?!?!) though! Sheesh it's basically a simple carbon steel hatchet w/wood handle in both cases, but I think the CS version was like forty dollars. Go figure.

I wish Cold Steel would replace the unsuitable Kraton handles of the Safe Keeper models.

They would go up a notch in my eye.....

.....if they would just add lanyard holes in the guard of the recon scout and went back to leather sheaths. Come to think of it, wheres the stag handle and polished blade on the Recon as well?

Lynn, whats going on mate?

tut, tut...:D

Cold Steel has always produced good quality knives, although some of their knives have become a bit pricey. You know, I was thinking about how just a few years ago, in Cold Steel's Special Projects catalogues, they used to criticize 420 steel as junk and criticize bead blast finishes on blades saying how ugly they were.
Now I see knives like the Desperado and the Safe Keeper with 420 steel and bead blast finishes. Ironic, isn't it?

Got a Spec. Projects 'Christmas sale' circular in yesterday. Boy times have changed, the Vietnam hawk is 25 bucks. Same for the javelin. The triple actions are 50. Kobun's down to 45, and they've changed the HTC kukri, looks like a 15" blade Ghurka light-70 dollars. Wonder what the prices from online vendors will be like now. Seems CS realised they needed to alter prices cause of the competition.

If you like these prices, grab them while you can. They are off their X-MAS SALE flyer and will probably bounce right back up once the season is over.
