Cold steel

Im not trying to side with one group or the other about Cold Steel advertising !!! I can see how some people loose sleep over Cold Steel slicing big chunks of beef or chicken hanging from a hook or pounding some knife threw the hood of a car....im just not one of them...if anything it made me look up reviews to see what people had to say about them who owned them!!!!

I've carried a 4" voyager for the past 11 months and its a absolute beast. the lock is stupid strong. i whole heartily believe it can take anything a equal sized fixed blade could take within practical use. (chopping, battening, prying, ect) after a almost a year of hell its only got the tiniest amount of play. its basicly the smallest amount i would consider play. and as mentioned earlier, the absolute perfect edc for me would be a s30v blade version of the voyager. i chose the voyager over the rest of their equally sized folders (recon 1 and ak-47) because of the full flat grind, which for a Knife meant for rough use is a must in my book. as for opening and closing the blade, i find it just as easy as any other liner lock I've used. can open and close it very quicky and safely without thinking

Get the Recon 1 XL! It's a big bastard! It's like having a pocket sword...almost. All of the Recon 1 folders are built like brick shathouses. They have great ergos, an awesome lock, and are priced right. You really can't go wrong.

As for the Cold Steel marketing, eh, who cares? Why would anyone be bothered? I personally think the videos are definitely cheesy, but they are one of the few companies that actually has the balls to put their money where their mouth is and SHOW what their knives can do. Will you ever need to puncture a car hood with a folder or cut a hanging pig in half with one stroke from a sword? Probably not, but it's their videos that prove that you could. Corny? Yes, but corny sells knives to the average Joe.

All I ever wonder about is what they do with all that freaking meat! After the filming was over I'd have the biggest BBQ in HISTORY!!!!!!!

I agree, I kind of like the marketing myself. I've used this quote before on the forums but it's the old Tommy Boy quote, "If you want to take a good look at a T bone steak you could stick your head up a bulls ass, otherwise you could just take the butchers word for it." There marketing is the butcher showing you the steak, in some instances quite literallyy. I EDC a mini recon 1 spear point (not to be confused with the micro recon 1). I love it. I did a lot of research on the knife and the lock coupled with solid g10 is great. Plus it's at a price point where I don't care about losing/ breaking it.

If you like the recon but it. They are very ergonomic for any non mutant size hand. They are well made knives with a crazy strong lock, ok steel, and good design.

I got a medium Voyager clip point about 2 years ago. Very solid knife. Flat grind aus8 holds an edge well and is easy to touch up. Yes the lock back is a little stiff. Yes the pocket clip is a pants eater. A little sand paper under the clip will cure problem. Tri-ad lock is super strong.
Avoid black coating on Cold Steel - weak spot.

Cold Steel Recon 1 tanto second in line down from the top.

Whatever that second knife from the bottom is, I'll be your friend forever if you send it to me. And I'm not even that into tantos. That thing just looks pretty to me.

The Recon 1 is my overall favorite folding knife. I like it so much that I bought two. It's built to do a job, and whatever job you put it to, it's going to get it done. No bells and whistles, all performance - and it delivers in performance.

If I were in the market for a tanto blade specifically, Cold Steel would be the absolute last company I would check out.

I am just so turned off by their over-the-top ridiculous marketing, it has the opposite effect on me personally. :(

I would probably go Emerson, Benchmade (sorry), Kershaw Blur, etc.

It's very poor form to post something like this about any company in that company's subforum. Not only does it contribute nothing to the topic's discussion, it's simply rude and obnoxious. :thumbdn:

Agree 100%

I buy products for what they are!!! Not some Marketing-Hype, CS makes great knives at a great value. Try to find an equal if possible.

Its a Hogue EX-01 with aluminum handle.

If you want to go with a more practical style than the tanto, Knifeworks.com has the spear point for 43 bucks.

I bought a mini recon 1 for my bug out bag.

I've had the clip, tanto, and spear -- still have the spear point Recon 1, I love it! Outstanding folder with the strongest lock of any folder I own.

I have a Recon 1 and also a Mini Recon 1, both in spear point. Simply put, these are knives that work, and work well at a very good price point. The G10 is aggressive, but it took all of about 4 minutes to remove the pocket clip and sand it down with 600 grit emery cloth to where its still "grippy" and no longer shreds my pants pockets. I like AUS 8 steel, simply because it takes a hair whittling edge, holds it for a reasonable amount of time and is pretty easy to sharpen up again, and Cold Steel does a very good job with their AUS 8. Both outstanding knives!

I EDC a Recon I tanto point, half-serrated and an AK-47. My pops carries a Recon I as well.
I have a lot of CS and I can tell you that their mid-range stuff has always been worth the money.

The lower-end stuff they make can often disappoint, like the Tanto Lite, or the Spike series. You see a lot of tooling marks on them, so if you get their cheap stuff, expect a little DIY before you're happy with it.
The only high end CS I have is a Hatamoto (discontinued) and it's really disappointing. when you fold it closed, one of the metal spacers in the frame always puts a ding right in the edge of the blade. I suspect that's why they disco'd it.

Anyway, I would say if you're not paying more than maybe $120 for it, you will get what you're paying for, and if you're buying anything CS for like $35 or less, expect to have to file it, sand it, etc.

THANKS! I'm stealing this idea. Been carrying CS for probably 10 years or more and never thought of this.

There are still a couple of places where you can get the XHP Recon 1. I carry one everyday. While the semi-serrated tanto blade might not the the "best" blade shape for cutting, it still has a very sharp edge, and of course it enhances even Cold Steel's legendary toughness.

Like another poster I have 2 Recon 1's myself, its by far my favorite folder and I abuse the hell out of it and it does the job every time! Both are Tanto serrated, its just a badass knife. Lately I been using it to dig out old caulking around my house while I been painting it and resealing cracks ect.. not once have I even remotely been concerned about the lock failing, its a bit large to EDC compared to other folders but if you dont mind a little extra in your pocket its great to have with you, in a self defense emergency situation it would do the job there too.
