Question???? Why is there no Cold Steel forum?
confused.gif
For the $$$ they are hard to beat.

For an extremely short time (a couple days?) there was a Cold Steel forum. Cold Steel decided to discontinue their participation in BF. There was much speculation that it was due to the fact that CS's controvertial nature attracted much pointed commentary to their forum.

However, I believe CS's official reason was the unforseen level of interest in their products and the resultant difficulty of keeping up with the number of posts in their forum.

Personally I would like to see CS return to BF. Regardless of their controvertial nature, they do make some good knives.

Cold Steel has advertising that is regarded by many as being somewhat over the top. They make some good knives, but this unneccessary hype rubs many people the wrong way.

If the ads rub them the wrong way they should not buy. At least CS tries to back up its claim with a video.

Cold Steel in no way supports the claims they make about their products. If they did they would allow an independent party to verify the performance standards claimed. Any attempt to do this by the consumer will void the warrenty on your Cold Steel blade - this is hardly supporting their product. It is simply hype.

Who makes their knives then?? Are they made in Taiwan, or in some other third world dunghole??

I personally find CS's 'hype' distasteful, and their product for the most part as hyped up junk.
IMHO if CS wants to back up their claims in some independent testing, and can prove why Kraton, or whatever other cheesy plactic they are using, is a better handle material than Stainless Steel, Titanium,G-10, or Aluminum, I'll reconsider my position.

I fully expect some flak over this, so let 'er rip!!!

For the money, they make some decent knives. As for the "hype", I don't even pay attention. But I would expect them to back up there warranty.

"Lead, follow, or get out of the way"

Many fine knife companies have some or all of their production manufactured overseas. Factories in Japan and Taiwan have been making great knives for Spyderco and CRKT, for example. This is no secret. And CS also marks some knives as made in Japan, and has said they import their new swords from China, and their new machetes from South Africa. There's nothing wrong with the practice, especially since it is not underhanded.

I have more knives by CS than any other company, most as users from years ago. I like them. They were easily worth what I paid.

But they do make a lot of noise about what are, basically, ordinary using knives. Next chance you get to watch their video, see how they use a pipe over the knife handle, and bend it against a meter showing how many degrees it can go. The pipe may bend that far, but the knife itself is bending 10 degrees or so less than they say.

They had a great chance to host a forum here. The immediate response was a bit overwhelming, but it would have settled down. That response was a sign of the enthusiasm of a loyal customer base. CS could have at least afforded the services of a customer service rep. Other companies do. Sal Glesser spends a lot of time on the Spyderco forum himself.

I'll admit the the "hype" is just that. However, I would think that a major manufacture such as C/S would take the time to participate in the forums.
They make a decent product for the money, although I think the warranty policy should be reviewed (many manufactures are for life) not one year [folder] five years for [fixed]. I totally disagree that the knives are junk. I personally have spent a lot more for knives by reputable companies with "better materials" and to be frank they "suck".

I have never seen a dull Cold Steel knife or one that was poorly made for that matter. Yes I think they are over-hyped, but the are good quality knives.

While I have no hate or love for CS, I have to say that their knives have always come with a better sharpened edge than any other production knife I have ever owned including becker and Busse. Additionally, knives like the Recon Scout and the SRK are about as tough as a knife can get in their price range(discounted, that is). While I don't consider them the equal of knives like Busse and some others, I still think they are well made knives. The only real complaint I have ever had is with their Kraton handles, they are definitelly the weak link in these knives.

I am not a CS fanatic, but I do think they make a good knife. I am especially fond of Carbon V steel. I think it fills a niche that some other manufacturers ignore--some of us just like a carbon steel blade.

Like How? Can you give us an example? I do not think that is done by prohibiting their tests duplication

Hype aside, and I really have no problem with that since I can ignore it if I wish, CS makes excellent products, IMHO. I have more CS knives than any other make and have no complaint as to price, workmanship or steel; Carbon V is a superb carbon steel. Lynn Thompson should be credited for being one of the most innovative blade designers. He popularized the North American tanto, raised industry standards and has introduced a host of good products from axes to shovels. Kraton may not be as durable as some materials, particularly if you're into serious abuse, but when you're fumbling around inside a moose, and it's cold and your hands are slippery from all the gore, there isn't a material that's any better for keeping a handle on things.

Has anyone else had this problem with CS folders? The knife I most often carry, a 4" Voyager, opens easily when cold but it is noticeably harder to open after it has warmed up against my skin, where I usually carry it. I think the handle must be expanding, and oiling it doesn't help. Is this common? Is there a cure? Thanks.

Cobalt,
You are not the only C.S. enthusiasts that enjoys the line of knives, but doesn't like the molded rubber Kraton handles. I have done many handle conversions on their fixed bladed product line, and you would not belive the amount of RUST I find under the kraton handles when I cut them off. To see some examples of these C.S. conversions visit this page on my Web-site. www.sunrisecustomknives.com/repair.html
Give me an E-mail shout or a quick call if I can be of service to you.

I like Cold steel myself. In todays PC world everybody finds something offensive,so I would not worry about it if I was them.As far as a forum goes yes it was short lived, but it was also popular, maybe more so than CS planned on.

Come to think about it I think their form of advertising is quite successful after all look how often it is brought up here and how many reply.
