Cold Steel

$30
$300

Just playing, I have no strong feelings on the issue!

I am not about to buy either knife. the point is, ripping off designs is unethical- a word that means nothing to the scum at cold steal and those who support their theft. If you don't have integrity, you are nothing.

well for starters there are actually some pretty obvious deference’s, the strider bevel is way wider and aligns much better with the tip, the cold steel g.i tanto has a much more prounounced swedge, and no gimping on the back of the blade(which is kinda pointless with handgaurds...) the pommel on the cold steel version is more rounded and would probably make a better impact weapon, since it aligns with your hand..

and lastly the cold steel knife is a thrower

the strider is a fighter
its just stupid to compare them

you might wannabeopeningyoureyes.

Yeah... no strong opinion here. I'm gonna stick w/ Ranger knives to fulfil my heavy fixed blade needs. RAT as well. I used to be a big Cold Steel fan before I was exposed to "the forum," I have quite a few of their knives, but didn't really like the fact that most of mine were foreign made. I think that they make a quality knife for the $$, all ethics aside. I'm not about to get in the middle of that $hitstorm CS/Strider debate.

i dont really care either way guys, if strider makes a really good knife cold steels attempt isn’t going to hurt their company, if cold steel makes a 30 dollar knife that can compete with a strider then its probably time strider drops its prices(there is no way the cold steel knife could do this).

i did open my eyes and that is how i noticed the differences between the two knives....i sure didn’t do it by smell.........

i think in the end you could argue about were a knife is made, and if it is an original design or not till the end of time, but i think most people buy knives for their quality. i own 14 cold steel knives, if i didn’t like the first one i got, or the subsequent ones after that i wouldn’t be defending cold steel. i dont like their rants against other companies, i don’t like rants by any companies. i think we should judge knives by their strengths and weaknesses not their companies P.R.

i don't like to participate in these things but cold steel specifically describes and defames strider in the description of the gi tanto. they also list it as a fighter, not a thrower. i don't feel it was unethical for them to make a cheap copy of the strider, that's how markets work. i do, however, feel it was pretty uncool to say those things in the description.

Oh, that explains it! :jerkit:

yea actually it does. unlike your post, mine had a point to it, and added a well thought out argument to this discussion. its hard to say a knife is a rip off, it it has a radically different application then the original.

Has anyone purcahsed the Cold Steel boot knife the Counter Tact? It appears to be a replacement for the Peacekeeper that Cold Steel is going to stop making. If you have purchased it, what is your opinion?

Sgt398:
The Counter Tac is basically a thick, polished slab of Aus-8. The truth is that they are only ground on one side, and flat on the other (a chisel grind). This is good and bad. Good because they are sharper then if they were ground on both sides. In fact mine came very sharp in the box. Bad because its harder to make a straight cut. They are made mostly for sticking into things and opening mail, not for moderate or heavy utility tasks. As "boot" knives go its good quality and inexpensive.

You might feel differently if it was your design being ripped off. . .

As it is, you are arguing that an obvious copy is not a knockoff, and that says something about you-

Danzz: I thank you for your imput. My consideration was strictly whether it would make a decent boot knife for the money.

I bought a Cold Steel Scmitar, my first expensive knive (over $50.) I do say that I'm not blown away by it. The aus-8 is a better piece of steel than than what I'm used to (440 stainless). I bought it because I liked the design. That and I could not decide on a blade on the Recon 1. I think it's a good fighter, not that I ever get into a fight with it but you never know. It's about the most I want to spend on a knife (I spent $70).

What are your guys favorite brand of knives and why. I like to get a Good US made knife under $100 if it's possble.

If you go to www.coldsteel.com and click on the "New Items" button in the upper left hand corner, you can see all their new items.

Cold STeel has always amused me, they are an interesting mix of "practical" and "Look what I just got at the mall!"

The Kudo rip off Okapi?????????? that really sucks. It must at least be several times better, because you will battle to get more rudimentary than the Okapi, which still actually works.

Yeah, rip off. But am I seeing things or does the cheapo CS actually have a rounded tang while the Strider doesnt?

Sorry Cougar, I only thought there was one page to this thread and didn't see your post. My apologies.-Jeff
