There are lots of mixed feelings about cold steel knives:) so please share your opinions :thumbdn:

Where's that "dead horse" emoticon?

My opinion on Cold Steel is that they make some tough knives, some for fairly reasonable prices. They also make some mall ninja and novelty stuff.

Some people say that they steal other manufacturers designs. I have only found three examples- the Canadian Belt, which is a clone of Grohhman (I think). The Canadian Belt is $15, where as the Grohhman is around $150, so I don't think they are doing any harm to Grohhman. The second is the Kudu, an Okapi clone. They reference the Okapi, not by name, but by description. Personally, I prefer wood and carbon, but other people like polymer and stainless. They did the same thing with the discontinued Twistmaster, an Opinel clone. Again, I don't think this is doing Okapi any harm- the people who want wood and carbon will but Okapi, while the people who want stainless and polymer can get the Kudu.

Third one I know of is the GI Tanto. It's a Strider design, I'm pretty sure. IMO, copying Strider isn't a sin, crime, whatever what have you.

I think a lot of the CS hate stems from Lynn Thompson, their owner, who can be a bit of a loudmouth.

I also think a lot of the CS hate is misplaced. I would buy CS over Ontario (RAT cutlery)
Strider (lying) or Mantis (spamming).

Frost, Sog, Buck, and now Cold steel....Who are you going to "ask" about tomorrow?

Cold steel has been discussed to death here countless times.

Cold steel sells a wide range of products. Some are good, some are bad, and some have inconsistent quality control due to the fact that cs doesn't actually make any of their knives.

If you don't mind China-made knockoffs of other maker's designs and you can tolerate Lynn's attitude and BS then cs is definitely worth a look. I have seen the recent knockoff models "GI Tanto" and "Canadian Belt Knife" given very positive reviews.

I don't currently have any interest in buying anything from cs.

The Whole Idea for my company posts is just to make conversation and learn other peoples opinions However I Probably won't write any more due to the buck one blowing up in my face

Fair enough, but your comment in the Buck one earned it blowing up in your face. Right after that, you start one about Cold Steel (while knowing it's a controversial topic) If you start one "innocently" asking about Strider's history tomorrow, or the like, I'd call it trolling.

Yes it did by now I have probably been deemed satan due to that comment despite it being a joke

After Thompson's Killing Spree, Down-Under, I will not purchase another Cold Steel product, Ever.

That is true lynn's trip to austrailia was a killing spree I would still buy their stuff though

If there's one thing I noticed on these forums,it's that people do not like it when you talk trash about their favorite companies. Some act like you are directly attacking them, their family,or even their God.

Just a heads up JJ20198.Tread carefully;)

Welcome to Bladeforums:)

I think some of CSs stuff is ok. They make some tough knives at a low price such as the Voyager/Vaquero and Recon 1. I, myself, have a Ti-Lite, and I like it very much. I don't see myself purchasing from CS any further, though, simply because all (I think) their knives are made outside of the US.

It was the Cold Steel tanto that got me interested in knives back in the early 1990's. I still own an Outdoorsman, Safekeeper II, Synthetic Bokken, Synthetic Blackthorn walking stick, Chisa Katana, Scimitar, and a large Voyager Tanto folder that has taken tons of abuse.
I don't judge knife companies by their hype. If the product is affordable and can be used as a decent knife then I make the purchase.
I have moved on since the 1990's into buying more customs than anything else but Cold Steel and other production companies still make wonderful and worthwhile blades for all of us.

Cold Steel makes an excellent product for the price, generally speaking.

Their Voyager, Gunsite, Vaquero and Recon 1 folders are well made, reasonably priced and dependable. The steel is a good, solid grade and the knives come out of the box sharper than most other brands. Cold Steel does not provide premium steels and their San Mai series of steel is nothing but advertising hype.

Cold Steel makes a consistently decent product. Even their low-end fixed knives are a good bargain.

I don't think you need to hear my dislikes that are based on political or personal reasons, so I will skip over them. I feel there quality control is very hit or miss, too many different manufactures (some based in countries not known for their QC). Their cheaper knives are what they are, low priced semi disposable decent knives. I don't feel any of their knock offs offer any where near the quality of the targeted knives. Their expensive knives are a complete waste of money, $200-$600 dollars for CS

These are just my opinions and if you like them, then buy them. No one should determine how you spend your money but you. My point is I choose to spend mine else where.

I personally think CS has some good knives. I don't plan on buying any though, especially because of my hatred for Lynn Thompson. Not because he hunts but the way he tactically hunts and sounds and looks like a jackass.

Thanks, Bors.

I didn't realize this was the Buck thread guy.

I still stand by what I said in my earlier post.
