Well, of all the mid-range knives I've bought, CS seems to be anything but hit or miss. I reckon you can say the same thing about any knife company. I've got two CRKT knives that will not sharpen to razor sharpness. Others can be, though. I've had enough misses with CRKT that I doubt I'll buy another. Still, I've got one of their S-2 (large) in my back pocket now and it's a great knife. Titanium frame, ATS-34 blade, frame lock and sharp as a razor. Paid twenty-five bucks for it post paid, new, when Smokey Mountain was trying to sell out of them.
I've got a Desert Cruiser that's so dull I can't tell which is the cutting edge, top or bottom. I've never been unable to get a Cold Steel wicked sharp with even a pocket sharpener. I like edges where they'll slice cleanly through paper sideways with just a stroke. I also like the fact that Cold Steel polishes many of their blades. Bead blast finishes are an eye sore, plus they rust/corrode easier.
Also, with new people swinging into this site, you're going to get some of the same questions over and over, especially with the search feature not working. Add to that that companies can change almost overnight. Gerber went bad very quickly. They just stopped listing their knife steels and began getting real vague. Many of their present knives aren't as good as a lot of Maxams I've seen. It's very disheartening.
