It appears as though Cold Steel has dumped the "ultra lock" (Axis type lock) in favor of the "Tri-Ad lock" on models like the Recon 1 and AK-47, which used to have them. Also, it appears as though the Voyager and Gunsite series, which also now feature the "Tri-Ad lock" and re-designed handles, will now be made in Taiwan, as their catalog indicates "Japanese VG-1 San Mai" as the blade steel. Last but not least, as if it wasn't expected, the newest in the "Proof" series of videos is out, "Absolute Proof." I have to wonder if they'll have trouble thinking up a name to top that for their next video ("Even Proofier"). All in all, I expect people to be happy with Cold Steel's offerings this year, as they look to be improving.

it seems like the tri-ad lock is just another name for a lockback, unless I'm missing something

Well, you're missing the part about the Tri-Ad having a stop-pin in addition to the traditional lockback.;) This may help you better understand it.

I'm not his biggest fan either.........Not by a long shot! That said, I see the company making some improvements. I don't see any new knives that appear to copy the work of others, and it appears as though Cold Steel is indeed listening to their fan base. These are changes that are somewhat refreshing to see.

You ever meant him? Everyone that meets him says he is a very nice fella. His company's advertising seems over the top at times but from what folks have said that have actually meant him they seem to think he is a decent fella and knowledgeable. keepem sharp

We may not like Lynn, but we must agree Andrew Demko Tri-Ad lock is absolutely fantastic.
Lil' Rajah, mini AK47 and new Recon Scouts will rock, and beat ANY other knife in similar price when it comes to lock strength.
Also using laminated steel in user-class knives is a interesting step. I just don't like the shape of the handles for voyager class.

Eyewash quick:eek: I just saw a video of a 300 lb man in spandex:barf: That link to his website should have some type of warning. As for his new knives I really like the new look of a bunch of knives and the fact they brought back the safe-keepers.

The Tri-ad lock looks awesome. I love lockbacks, and Tri-ad looks like a natural improvement on them.

I just got a Cold Steel catalog in the mail and I admittedly know nothing about them. I will say though that the catalog was way over the top and I said to myself that they belong in a mall kiosk. Upon searching the subject in prior posts I am not the only one to feel or think that way. I have always wanted a Recon Tanto...just because, but the catalog turned me off big time. Just my simple minded thoughts...

Since the Spartan came out and the Lawman I am a Cold Steel fan, big time. Alot of people trash him but guess what...marketing is marketing, Swamprat Knives (part of the Busse family of Hype) goes out and hacks up defense trees with samurai swords but no one bats an eye...it's all just BS to sell their Tupperware.

The Tri-Ad lock is the real deal, period. Best design for strength I have used, better than the Framelocks, better than Axis, the only thing that comes close is Extrema Ratios lock back with the secondary safety, neither budges.

Thanks for the link to the OP.

No matter how you feel about Cold Steel's president the fact is the Tri-ad lock is a brute strong lock, with it's stop pin in steel for the blade to lock against.

cold steel is like anyother company, they have some junk but most of their products are very servicible. thompson in early years brought some innovative 1sts to american market. his trailmaster & recon scout are classics, also he was one of 1sts to bring laminated steels to american market. of course the swedish were in this forever.i beleive one of the biggest turn offs are his videos. now this guy is'nt a punk ,he just looks like one. i'm 71 & weigh what i did in marines in 60s so i know something about fitness. this guy is a fatty in appearance & vocalizations but he actually is a good shot & can really swing a blade. i believe he does train as he says, however his ego is bigger than the moon. i personally know several of the major players in cutlery industry & not one likes the guy. however we must not judge his products by his mouth & appearance.

I think most comercial knife makers hype there products somewhat. I mean look at the Emerson site. He says something like the mini Commander being able to penetrate a car hood and holding up to doing that. Then something hey you never know? I for the life could never figure out why I would take my nice mini C and want to stab a car hood. One thing I can say though about CS products is that for the most part they live up to the hype. My son has absolutely beat his Recon1 tanto to hell and back and it functions as well as it did the first time he ever used it. Lock up is stellar, blade still takes a wicked edge. He is a theater tech for a professional theater group here in the city and uses it constantly at work and has for the past several years. That is good enough for me.

I still say the Voyager series with the san mai flat ground blade with the tri ad will be stellar. That is what I am going to snag asap. keepem sharp
