Has anyone ever had a bad experience when it comes to cold weather and their knives? I'm not talking about chilly hands, I want to know if anyone has had their blades chip or snap:eek: as a result of use in cold climates. How cold does it need to be before this becomes a danger?

I have never managed to break a knife in the cold myself, with the exception of breaking the tip off a Mora, which isn't hard to achieve in any weather, cold or hot. :D And I've used knives and axes in temperatures below -50 degrees Celcius, in other words, cold enough to freeze hell over. With any decent knife, your body is likely to break before the knife.

how?

and where??

Yeah. I live in Finland. I've spent a lot of time on the northern side of the Arctic Circle, both in the Nordic Countries and in Russia. In the winter, it's sometimes pretty cold. The coldest I've had in Finland was, I believe, -50.5 C or something like that. It's been even colder than that in Russia, though I've missed (fortunately) the worst and rarest weathers. -60 Celcius wouldn't be much fun anymore. :foot:

The how isn't that hard, actually. Lots of warm clothing properly layered, and good gloves, and the edged stuff works as usual, although you'll want to be even more careful. Getting cut in that kind of cold isn't fun at all.

Elen, that makes our Winters here in PA sound like a warm Spring.

Heh, luckily, it's not usually that cold here. I think it was 2000 or 1999 when I "lucked out" and the temperature hit that -50.5 C mark when I was out camping and skiing. This was in Lapland. Most winters we get, especially in the south, are much warmer. On the other hand, it's always cold as hell in the northern parts of Russia. But I do rather like the cold. Must be in my blood.

I think in temperatures that low the main problem becomes handling the knife with numb fingers or in thick gloves or mitts !!!

It has gotten down to -50 F here, but I was lucky enough to be in a nice warm house.

20-30 Below Fahrenheit is not unusual. I don't really ever need to cut things when it is that cold, however.
