Coldsteel question

at $304, i'd get a Natchez Bowie.

supremely impractical for 99.9% of the chores i use a knife for, but hey, who cares?

It depends on what you want it to do. One combat knife produced by CS is their Peacekeeper; however, it's strictly a combat knife...double-bladed, Kraton-handled, light, maneuverable, concealable. But it's not a military knife. It's not a knife for prying, digging and smashing through crates.

The knife in my bugout bag is a Böker (not sure what the model is), but it does everything a good combat knife can be called un to do.

So what will you be using the knife for, specifically?
I suppose strictly defensive..Something that can be used effectively against a two-legged attacker or even a four-legged attacker(maybe in a wilderness environment). I also looked at a crkt Hishhou.

The CRKT Hisshou is an awesome knife! If I were you, I would buy that over any of the Cold Steel offerings. I have never used one but a buddy of mine has one and it is incredible. Its such a nice presentation piece but you can still pick it up and put it to use very practically which is what I think is so cool about it.

:D I think I might just do that.

If I didn't have 2 I'd buy the Magnum Tanto. I've got both the the ODA and the M/classic, prefer the ODA balance is better and sharpens easier....

If you're looking for a higher-end self-defense Cold Steel folding knife, you might look into the recently-discontinued Talwar, Hatamoto, Black Sable, and Spectre. They're harder to find now, but they're ounce-for-ounce some of the finest knives CS has ever made. Titanium construction, San Mai blades, and flashy enough to be good dress-knives as well.

As for fixed blades, the Black Bear Classic would be my choice for their top high-end self-defense knife. I've trained in Filipino martial arts for seven years now, and the Black Bear's Loveless-inspired design has many attributes that make it ideal for combat.

Is the black bear classic that much different than the oss? I mean other than the guard and handle?
