Coleman Fuel/white gas

I went to the store last week, and Coleman fuel was $9.99 for a gallon (like it's been for the last few months). I went back a few days ago, and they reduced the price to 5.50 (I picked up another gallon at the outlet store for $3.00 because it was dented)! However, instead of the can saying Coleman Fuel, it now says Coleman White Gas. The same claims are on the can (formulated for Coleman lanterns, inhibits rust, cures cancer, blah blah blah...) but it is called white gas instead. I know you can run white gas in lanterns and stoves, but is this all that Coleman fuel is? I've thought this before, but now I'm pretty sure. It doesn't explain the price drop though...

Also, what are other names for white gas. All I know is Coleman Fuel and Naphtha.

Maybe it's an end-of-season clearance. I usually buy the no-name brand and can't tell the difference. MSR makes its own white gas fuel, and it's about four times as expensive.

It is the same thing. I believe that it's commonly called white gas in Australia and the UK. I don't know why the price drop, but I'll have to check around here and pick up a few cans if it's gone down here too.

I use a lot of Coleman fuel for my pyromaniacle endeavors:

I have used both in my Peak 1 multi fuel stove and cannot tell the difference. I get the same burn time and heat out of both of them.

Once upon a time..this is starting to sound like a fairy tale, motor fuel contained lead as an additive to reduce engine knock, most everywhere you filled up the family car was leaded gas with the exception of a few unleaded [white gas] gas stations. I recall my father filling up the Coleman stoves and lanterns at Ammoco, which sold nothing but unleaded white gas in those days, early 60's. The Coleman gear ran great with no generator fouling whatsoever, so as far as I can tell, Coleman fuel and white gas are the same.

White gas and naptha are indeed the same thing. It's called 'camp fuel' here, but it's the same thing. Beware when buying 'clearance' fuel though because it does have a shelf life. Caveat emptor and all that.

The coleman fuel I had in the garage is two years old. My stove (MSR Shaker) went out about every two minutes with it. I try and get new stuff every year.
