Fellow knife collectors and Camillus reps,

I've got a qusetion that I thought I could possibly bring up here. Sometime in the 80's, I bought my father a small 2 bladed penknife for Christmas, the knife was a Coleman/Western #W244 with wood handles. He carried the knife for some time and at some point in it's use the clip point main blade broke off at the tang. That happened years ago, but now of recent, my father passed away this past month, while my mother was going through some things of his things, she came across this very knife that I had given to him back then. Although it was broken, he still had kept it in his top dresser drawer, and other than the broken blade the knife is near mint. It was found inside a padded envelope he had addressed to "Western Cutlery" of Longmont, CO. I know now that they are no longer there, and a quick search of the internet for Coleman/Western brought me to Camillus Cutlery. As my father was, I am a native of East Syracuse. Also as my father was, I am a big fan of Camillus knives, and have been a collector of pocketknives in general for almost 20 years. My question and point to all of this? This knife obviously has extreme sentimental value to me, is Camillus is now covering Coleman/Western warranties, as this one has a 100 year warranty. If so, will the knife be repaired or replaced? For obvious reasons I would not want a replacement, but would rather want this very knife to have a new clip point blade installed. If I were to send it in, would I be guaranteed to get this very knife returned? I would rather keep it broken than get another in it's place. Any thoughts?

Fellow knife nut...

Camillus acquired the Western knife brand in 1991. Any Western knife made from 1991 to now is covered by a limited lifetime warranty for defects in material or workmanship.

We do offer a repair service for Western knives depending upon replacement parts availability. Some of the knives that were made by the original Western Cutlery Co. are still being made at the Camillus factory. Your knife, which is a model #W244, has not been made by Camillus so replacement blades are not available.

Oh well... so much for the 100 year warranty. Lasted about 20 or so.
Very disappointed, seems to me that if a company "aquires" another brand, they should take the responsibility of "everything" that comes along with it, including 100 year promises. Camillus just lost some of my respect. I'll say this, the next knife that I bought my Dad after the Western broke was a Case, that's was in his pocket everyday, in my pocket everyday now. No regrets there.

Im sure they will replace it with a similer model, and that would still fulfill there end of the warranty deal, as im sure there Return policy states repair or replacement at the companys decision. How can you expect them to repair it when they did not make it and have no parts available to do so? And by replacing it they still hold up to the 100 year promise.

Hey Rifter

On an entirely different warranty subject I have had several of your e-mails returned... Please e- mail me or call collect 513 231 9446 as I need a regular maiing address to send you a replacement BK 6. THANKS !

My Dad gave me a Western L48A, like his, when I was a boyscout. I was screwing around and lost it in our Hedges by our porch. Never found it. Dad died a couple of months ago. I am getting his house ready for sale. I was pulling the hedges/bushes out & my son found my knife. Over 30yrs ago.
I was hoping Western could put a new handle on it & freshen it up.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thx John

John,
Western Cutlery sold their business to the Coleman Co. in 1984. In 1991 Camillus bought the rights to the Western brand at auction.
Camillus closed their doors for the last time in April of 2007. Hence Phil's recommendation.
Good luck, sounds like it could be worth the effort to bring it back.

Somewhere on my 13 acres along the Conejos River there is a Western L39 rusting away :o
I lost it when I was a teen ager
Your story gives me inspiration......:D

I'd find a knife maker who does leather handles

Is it rusted?

Outta curiosity===>
Does it have a blood groove?
