collecting of knives?

I collect and use custom knives. To me, they are useable art. I just LOVE knives. I do not buy them for investment purposes.

I collect because my father never allowed me to have or carry one as a child, also my grampa gave me a folder before he past away which I love, but its a cheap knife and now my father gave me his knife from when I was a child also not a good blade but one that I equally love.If God allows me to have a child,he will receive both knives along with a my blade which he will be able to trust and use unlike the ones past on to me,love them but I wouldnt use them.I buy and buy cause I still dont know which one will be the one that my child will remember me for.

I have used knives since I was in the first grade. As the years go by, you have more ability to acquire more of just about everything. So, I do! When I was a little kid, I frequently was embarassed wearing socks and underware with holes in them or simply worn out stuff.... well, I can honestly say that I have plenty now and when things get a bit worn or streched out; I trash them.

I collect because I like them: Like to Look and Hold:

Here is a few of them:

I understand were you are coming from, Not to say knives don't do it for me any more, they do. But it takes a lot for me to buy a knife now, I have had the feeling of whats the point if its just going to sit there for the last year or so. I went from like 200 knives to 4 now. Really when was i going to carry all those knive.

Its's really very simple...Hello my name is Kevin and I'm a knife-a-holic.

I buy knives because I find them a cheaper alternate for gun collecting. I don't have the cash for that, plus who knows... soon we may not even be able to have guns.:(

I own a couple of collections: I have a belt buckle collection. Those consist of buckles that were given to me, I bought on vacation, or have special meaning to me (1979 brass ROTC emblem).

I also collect knives. These are tools I will carry/have carried every day of my life. That I (will eventually) carry into battle, that I will use as a police officer, or in my daily life. I have the feeling my kids will remember Dad's SOG that mom gave him when they were dating, or Dad's griptillian that he bought as an ROTC cadet and carried during his summer at Ft. Knox. This is dad's M21SF he wouldn't use cause he cut himself too often, etc... I hope my small but growing collection will make it's way down the family tree until God makes room for the new heaven and earth.

That's why I collect. I will use the knives that I buy, at least occasionally. Knives are something that my grandkids will hopefully want to see every time they visit.

For me it's plain and simple

Now that i am a knowledgeable knife buyer I tend to want a lot less knives.
When i started out I had a list of like 60 knives that i wanted & now that is down to something like 19-25. I love customs, but since I can only afford productions I want the best from the companies I buy.

I only buy knives that I carry which are functional within my life. I'm a student and I live in a City so i tend to buy folders and small fixed blades that aren't really tactical with crazy blade configerations.

The knives which i will buy now need to be the best in it's category & from companies I truly like.

I have been thinking about this alot latley actuly. And the way I see it is as long as i don't go crazy and buy every one I see I'll be ok. I just make sure to do my reserch to make sure I actuly want the knife. I the past year that I started collecting knives I have picked up about seven. And, I make my self carry them, so that I can play with them and enjoy them. Now granted I buy production knives, so I'm not dropping the money that alot of people on here do. But eventuly I plan to buy some nice rare balis. That time will come.

It is true that most of us probably do not carry all of the knives we buy. I'm not sure what the reason is but some people just have the addictive, collecting type of personality, and for me it's all about the knives. I think that.... um excuse me, I'll have to finish this post later. Right now I think I need to get over to ebay and find a good deal on a new benchmade........

For me, collecting knives is feeling secure or more than that it kind of takes me back to happier times in my life as a kid. I know that sounds crazy but most of the happy times in my childhood involed a knife. Whether it was camping with my dad and uncles or at a cook out or sitting around a fire at the hunting club. I mean when i was a kid and in the Scouts i always felt safe as long as i had a knife. When i was in the Army during the Gulf War i felt safe with a knife stapped to my leg. Wether i was safe or not, i felt safe. Even in the woods i have to have a knife just for my own security feelings. I can remember when i was a kid, my Great uncle would sit by his wood heater and chew tobacoo and sharpen his knife. The glow of the fire and the sound of that knife going over the wetrock would make me feel safe and happy. I admitt i have a fascination with knives and as long as i remeber i always have. I think it started from the Scouts as a boy and being in the woods. Even one of my favority cartoon character had a knife, It was Peter Pan, just because he carried that knife i thought he was so cool. I loved yogi bear because of the logcabins and the woods on the cartoons. I know i am weird. I just dont know how to explain it. As long as i have a good knife i feel like i am Tarzan, I can survive anything.

Who needs a reason? I didn't intentionally start collecting; I'd just find an occasional good deal here & there, and after a few years, had about 25-30 knives. I like each one; some are heirlooms, others are EDC, some are just fun to look at.

The nice thing is I can buy a nice knife for anywhere from $20 on up, Can't do that with too many other hobbies.

I once saw a show on collectors of antique bed pans, urinals, and chamber pots, after that I stopped asking my self if my hobbies were strange or not.

The heart wants, what the heart wants, I guess:).

I'm showing that to my wife. Maybe then she'll quit pesterin' me about my knife collection. I'll just say "It could be worse." :D

thx - cpr

I buy and collect knives so that when they are finally banned--I'll be a big bad-ass bad guy! :)

I hold onto them until Dad (aka BladeForums.com member James Todd) finds them laying around and puts them into his collection. I bought a William Henry collectors edition knife - http://www.williamhenryknives.com/collectors-only/popups/0307/030740.html - earlier this year, handled it once or twice, I think it's now in that wall-mounted collection of his...

I saw this son, was that not intended as a Fathers' Day present? :D

Watch out or I might take the house back.:D:D:D:D:D
