I'm curious about collecting interests. What percentage of your collection is "older knives" and what percentage is "newer knives"? I'll call older knives those from about 1990 or earlier and newer knives after 1990. That's an arbitrary line, but any line is arbitrary. The percentage doesn't have to be precise, in fact "most" will do.

I guess my collection is roughly 90-95% older. How about you?

Bert

My collection consists of Buck 110s.
I have every Version and Variation from the beginning up through the four dots, and a few beyond that.
I also have a decent collection of the 50th Anniversary 110s.

Those two groups are the main focus of what my collection is.
I've been slowly selling off knives that don't fit in those two groups, or some that do but that I have better ones in my collection already.

So after all that I would say maybe 30% vintage and 70% modern.

I collect full line so I'm pretty well spread over all vintages. The poorest representation are Tactical types but I did buy 2 Striders last month at a knife show.

Two 371 (Walmart editions; G-10 and amber bone)

One 877 fixed blade. (Made in USA Walmart edition)
Almost forgot. Large trapper with fish shield and fishing hook bail. (still waiting for me at the office)

I have a random lot covering several ages. I think the overwhelming majority are 90's or newer. I'm comfortable saying that my only collection is of 303s which I have just about every scale variation. The balance of my Bucks are users, retired users, or those I've picked up for future trade bait.

Well I can throw in an answer based on when I collected. I collected 119's, 120's, 121's, and Twin sets, as well as Fillet knives from late 1930's thru 1985 when the blade stamps went to a date code system. In addition I began collecting 300 series knives from the Schrade made knives again into the 80's. Currently I only collect Bushcraft style knives that are mostly one offs. In the prime of Buck collecting I had over 300 knives. The oldest was a Group 1, Pre-factory knife made (estimated) in the Late 1930's, that maybe the oldest known knife that has a Buck stamp.

I collect Buck knives (period), although in the last year it has been mostly 110@29%, 100@18% by far most before date stamp all the rest 500's, 300's and other about 50/50 for date..

As far as Buck knives go, about 75% are older and 25% are newer, give or take a bit.

What I have in the collection now are mostly customs. 317 customs ( I have had done and special Buck projects) also 124 customs and special projects. Also have a small collection of 110 50th annys. Sold all my early 60's 100 series. Also have a small collection of 277/279 customs. Plus a few odds and ends. Can't collect everything.

My collection spans from 1962-82, all Buck models. Even sharpening stones that fall in that era. If a 61 barrel nut comes along I'll try to get it. DM

Some would say there's a difference between collecting and hoarding. At one point I would take offense to someone who said I hoarded knives as opposed to collecting, but these days I buy what I like, whether it fits into some area of likeness or pattern. Collecting can be done in many forms or none at all. I would have argued this point in my younger days.

I'd guess my overall knife collection, as well as my Buck's, are 60 - 65% older than 1990 and the balance newer. OH

I've been collecting 110s and 112s mostly three dots and earlier. Have all the 112s minus a version 1 variation 2. The oldest 110 I've managed to acquire is a Buck dot; version 3 variation one.

OFF TOPIC:

Some would say there's a difference between collecting and hoarding.

Matt,

I don't want to get into a big discussion about collecting vs hoarding, even though I have pretty strong opinions. However, you have made a point of understanding the history and lineage of the 100 series and 300 series knives that you acquired; I say that makes you a collector.

I'm in the user catagory of collectors. 95% post '90 and 95% are stored out of the box and have been used at least a few times. I have multiples of a few discontinued models in case I lose one or so I don't use one with special meaning. The 110s keep growing but they are all different.

I do the 100's fixed and 110 folders. Probably have 75% new fixed and 100% new 110's (mostly 50th).

I tell people all the time...I collect 110s; I accumulate many others. My collection according to the 1990 line would be about 80% being "newer" 110s.
