Collecting tips for a noob

Educate yourself, and don't buy under pressure. There are lots of good points in this thread. Just keep in mind that not only is hindsight 20/20, it also highlights the outliers. If you know what you are willing to pay for something and have to walk away from it, you will be better off than kicking yourself for spending too much on something you didn't want. I tried to collect straight razors for a while, and from time to time still look. But early on I made some purchases that were terrible.

There is also a lot to be said for turning stuff over. Its a slower way to loose money, but it gets knives in hand, and then back out into circulation. The main thing as long as you are enjoying it, and its not causing strife at home, do it how you want to.

In addition to what all these intelligent folks said, also expect your tastes to change from time to time. Your perfect knife today might be completely different a few years from now.

collectibility like knives I can pass down to my kids

Depending on what you do with your EDC knives, they will last a long time and you can pass those down to your kids. You don't have to keep special knives unused just to pass down. Your kids will like the knives that you liked and used better than knives that you just collected.

My best advice would be to make a list, this stops you from rushing out and buying everything you hear about. It also allows you to take a better approach to your collection, You can then look for deals on knives you want or wait till they show up on here, you can prioritize, and most importantly you can think things over you may change your mind.
After you read all we have to say just go out and buy the cool knives you want, just make sure to post pics so we can all drool over them.

I don't believe in safe queens but some knives get a little harder used than others. I never have bought a knife because I thought of it as a financial investment. I buy them because I like knives, I'm curious about the new knife I bought and I have managed to convince myself I "need" something new. I am pretty new to this as well and I think the no more than one a month is good advice.

Haha "need" I'm with ya! Yes very good advice. Hey whata ya know might even be a good New Years Resolution. I am going to add it to my list.
