collecting, vs using

i find that i use knives, and if i find one that i really like i try to explore/collect the entirety of that line. so i might try to get every chive, or leek, or delica, that i can get my hands on. While im mostly a user, i definetly do some collecting in that way.

I am (almost) strictly a tool user. Tend to get on a kick every 5 years or so to get a better knife for my individual use than what I'm currently using. This is where I really appreciate the collectors -their willingness to buy multiples is what makes it economically possible for the various quality manufacturers to offer the tremendious variety of designs that show up all year long. Out of that remarkable diversity of blades/handles/mechanisms - I always find one that just fits both my hand and the tasks at hand better than anything else.I make sure I get two of these and then try to avoid knife stores for the next 5 years or so.
I may not be a collector - but applaud their desire for more/better/best - it's what allows the rest of us to find our personal best tool.
Besides sentimental attachment ( My Uncles WW-2 Cattargus Navy sheath knife) - I do seem to sit on a few knives that I just plain like too much to sell : A plain Gerber PAUL II - this used to be my travlin knife -but I keep it more for the incredible lock. A 1520 -that was my first Onion design -another outstanding EDU tool.
Nough said.

The vast majority of my knives haven't even opened a letter. I have a rather large stable of knives that I have and (if the mood strikes again) will edc. But most never see the light of day except for when I want to play with them (which is often).

Money doesn't really play a role in which ones I carry and which ones I don't. Currently I edc one of my most expensive (Sebenza) along with one of my cheapest (Byrd Finch).

I'd say almost all of my Kershaws have seen at least one day of carry (except the Ti JYDII, E.T. and the Shallot). I envision that the Shallot will make it to the pocket some day, just not yet. I do have seconds of some of my favorite Kershaws so that I'll always have one that is 'perfect'.

It's a sickness, and the only cure is more knives. :)

Mine, mine, mine, mine. I feel like a Sheik with many wives, none that I want to trade. Like with wives you can't leave them in virgin condition. There are almost nil knife knuts in Botswana so trading is difficult.

However, my general solution is if I like something enough, I will buy two of them - one to keep for a rainy day and one to use. It requires spending more money and I can't always afford to do it, but this has always been my favorite way to approach collecting - keep one new as a spare and use the other.

I am so picky about the knives I do like that I do the same thing as far as getting two of each. Just got a Tyrade at the first of this month and have a second Tyrade coming on April 1..............and I ain't fooling!:D

Btw, I agree it can get expensive to do the two knives but if you only have a few that you really like it can be done. This DOES NOT apply to any custom folders though. Like j5 knives I buy but later find out I won't carry and use will go on the trading block.

I am mainly a user, but i do have several knives that i do not plan on ever using. I mainly buy to use, but if when i get a knife that does not fit in with what i need it to do but i like they way it looks/feels, i'll still keep it. The only knife i have strictly bought for collecting is one of my two damascus leeks, the other one is a occasional user:o.
