Collector Knife "NO-NO's"

Interesting topic, seems like there could be quite a few factors separating the two. E.g passion of a collector vs consumerism of an accumulator. Seems to me an enthusiast would more likely describe a collector. I think this topic needs a thread.

I just think “accumulator” is used negatively almost always, so I think there needs to be a distinction between someone who has a focus and intent about their buying (a collector) vs. someone who is passionate about something but who just buys what they like without it having any specific direction.

At its most basic, any enthusiast has a knife collection, but I think that’s way too generic to be useful here.

I am a watch enthusiast as well. Very interested in them but I have no specific direction to what I buy, aside from liking it.

Just read through the thread, I see the difference but there seems to be a pretty large grey area there.

I have been both and neither over the years. I guess by this definition I am now a collector of Large CRK folders that I use daily. For many years I called myself a simple user of knives. I only owned 1 or 2 and was good with that route after years of collecting. I guess now Im a bit of a specialist again.

Your next adventure is learning how to properly sharpen a blade.......
You will buy a new knife..........and think that's not sharp........I'll really put an edge on this knife.........
Then people will ask why you don't have hair on your arms..........LOL
Literally just read your reply while taking a quick break from my latest Google search: "How to sharpen a knife".
I did look over both shoulders... not gonna lie. Freaked me out a bit.

I don't know about all of you, but I am a connoisseur of fine knives! I started out as an admirer then I was a purchaser, after a little while I became an appreciator and then before long I was an accumulator, then a collector, then an enthusiast... and now I have finally arrived at connoisseur after 4 years in college and a few years of grad school studying the way of the knife!

Whatever you end up doing, just make sure you have fun

FUN INDEED!!! The one thing I'm liking so far (based on my limited knowledge) is that if purchased correctly (knife AND price), there seems to be a good chance of breaking even should you want out!! haha

OH, LOOK AT THAT ONE!!! "Patience, Grasshopper..."

I've already realized that limiting yourself to one or two patterns and your favorite handle material is probably a good idea. Maybe grab a unique piece here or there. Otherwise, there's no end in sight.

Perhaps, a weird way to think about it.

“Enthusiast” would be a less pejorative term I think.

To me a collector has a theme. Personally I am starting to collect bird & trout knives. I also have a bunch of random folders that have no cohesion….I just like them.
Amature.

late 18th century: from French, from Italian amatore, from Latin amator ‘lover’, from amare ‘to love’.

Here is the knife owners' paradox: on the forums, many will beat the drum on how knives are tools to be used, and owners proudly boast that they really use their knives.

Then you go to the Exchange, For Sale section, and virtually every knife is described as BNIB or LNIB or never cut, original edge. And some of these sellers are the ones who look down on people who DON'T use their knives.

Yeah. So I ignore all the voices and do what I want with my knives, which is mainly polishing them with Ren wax and fondling them.
Hypocrites suck in general. The problem is that the exchange is almost always "LNIB" you don't see many people selling users anymore. I bought a few users off off there (Spyderco's Southard and Domino) several years back, still have them. I see a lot of knives advertised as LNIB when they aren't or customs that have obviously been used selling for near new. It's discouraging.

I use, to one extent or another everything from Civivi to Alan Davis.

Many of my knives are discontinued or were special editions. I have my heavy users and light ones, hope to never lose or break any of them.

Welcome to our insanity!
Knives are meant to be used. Otherwise: they are just expensive wastes of space. Use them how you like, and make their value come to you in the stories you have of their use! 👍
Uh oh! I didn't intend to start a "LNIB" vs "user" debate...

I was a bit saddened when I realized what I'd just done. Then, I literally BURST OUT LAUGHING at how ridiculous it was!!

It actually reminded me of a story from years ago when I was shopping for a new truck.
As I was browsing the lot, I ran into a gentleman who was there to pick up his brand new PLATINUM EDITION, king cab, etc... top of the line.
We were just standing there chatting and he was bragging about how nice the truck was going to be with all it's bells and whistles.
Next thing you know, here it comes around the corner... He wasn't lying!! It was one of the nicest (and most expensive) trucks I'd ever seen in my life!!
Fresh gloss black paint and all shined up, of course! The guy who pulled it around from detail hops out and says, "Well... what do you think??".
The guy I was chatting with walked up to it, looked it over from several feet away and calmly says, "It's only missing one thing."
He proceeds to reach in his pocket, pull out a set of keys and put about a 6" scratch right in the middle of the driver's side door.
I couldn't believe what I just witnessed!! Why would he do that?? What was he thinking??
He looked back at me and calmly said, "Now, I don't have to worry where I park."

Not totally related but similar in theory. LOL!

My method for knives is I play with it a day or two to be sure it's going to be what I want. Then I cut up the box and toss the knife into my pocket with my keys and go to work
