Collector or user?

I wouldn't worry about spending/investing a decent wedge when buying a knife if I knew it would end there, my problem is I want to buy too many to commit a lot of money into a single knife

USA made Schrades are prolly the best value existing in traditional knives. Does the Uncle Henry Stockman use the swindon key? If not, that is an even better buy to me. Great shape, NIB Schrades are getting harder to find as well.

Will it go up in value? I'm not a collector but I think it will, however not a huge amount. They made a lot of them.

Maybe long term.

Sure are a bunch of pocket knives that I either cannot afford, cannot justify the expense, or I’m not interested in.

And yes- the old ones - Camillus and Schrade and others are an excellent value if the blades have not been ground away and they still snap without wobble. I have had fun looking for them, and buying some of them.

Still, I have decided to quit searching, watching, and buying off the auction site. At least for awhile. Maybe I’ll just wait for flea market season. I simply have more than I need.

Which leads me to BF. Here, I get to see a little (or a lot-lol) of everything. Some may think I’m nuts, but in certain threads, I hit the like button on all of them. I do it out of appreciation for taking the time and trouble as well as the fact that I just like knives. All of them. Yes, I enjoy looking at a $175 thing of beauty, but no more than a beater japanese barlow or a Rough Rider with funky fractions on the scales.

I don't collect, I have about a total of about a dozen traditional pocket knives (GEC's and Case's). I use them and enjoy them very much. I do have an appreciation for quality in certain things in my life. I don't go crazy over it and I don't insist on it in everything, but in my pocket knives I appreciate the old school craftsmanship that GEC does a good job in giving us. I won't go over $100 for a pocket knife though, that's about my limit. I haven't bought another one in over a year (maybe close to two years?), I know what I like and I'm now enjoying the ones I have.

Have always seen it that no-one is wrong and everyone is correct.

Low budget....high budget........user.........collector..........both, whatever - if it rings true for you - it rings true for you.

Having been to a few knife shows and met a load of makers/visited them in their workshops, I understand the making and the complexities of making a wee bit more now. Into that goes ever greater appreciation.

My wife began to understand when I asked her to think of my 'absurd' collection of knives as pocket jewellery - she's been fine ever since... ;)

"Is a t-bone going to make you live longer than a can of vienna sausages?"
Don't know but you will live happier!:D
Ooops ...that may have been rhetorical, sorry.:(;)

Well nicer doesn't always necessarily mean better.

To me if something is better it actually functions better.
Generally If the the extra expense isn't actually getting me a knife that works better then to me it's not worth it.
This is in regards to handle materials that cost more without aiding in performance, and things like this.

Now looks do matter, so I can't say a GEC isn't worth the expense. Some of the bone...ext they use is just gorgeous.

I carried and used one trapper for years. Then I wanted to replace it because one blade rubbed the liner when I closed it. That was the beginning of the quest for perfection that resulted in me owning Avagadro's number of knives. Now I miss the familiarity of a well-used pocket knife, so I'm thinning the accumulation and mostly using a small rotation.
