Over the years, a lot of my collection resulted from me buying things that I thought would work for me, but as it turns out, didn’t. They are still great pieces, so I haven’t sold them, but I don’t use them much.
Or, maybe it was something I bought knowing it had limited use, and I keep it around for that. Like, I have a First Production Run Benchmade 100RR (GIN-1, G10) for a water knife. I don’t have much need for a water knife, because I don’t actually go in the water much, but when I do go in the water, I bring that knife. It’s actually a pretty decent EDC fixed blade, but I rarely use it for that.
I have a pre-production Benchmade 190 Drop Point Hunter and a regular production 192 Bird & Trout to match. Those are my “good” hunting knives, so of course they end up being shelf queens, because my Gerber Pro-Guide II knives (Drop Point Hunter, Caper, and Skinner), my “good enough” hunting knives, have yet to let me down in the field.
Gerbers were the production knives to have in my younger years, so when I started making better money in my 20-30s, I bought up a lot of Gerbers off eBay for my TEOTWAWKI barter goods stash. Instead of buying gold, I bought finished tool steel products and tobacco, among other things. But, when my life fell apart about 15 years ago, I needed to sell that stuff to survive.
About two dozen Pro-Guide IIs became Christmas gifts for my friends, I had Patriots, BMFs, Morays, a Parabellum, Magnum LSTs, and a matched pair of the first generation Yaris (I really wish I could have afforded to keep those). Then I had a mess of Cold Steel Bushman and Mini Bushman knives. The Minis fetched excellent prices on eBay, since they are discontinued and highly sought after. I had some odd SOG pieces, too.
I’m not interested in collecting, per se, but I can’t afford it, now, anyway. If I buy anything new, it will only be because I want to use it. On my wish list are: 93 mm Victorinox Alox models, the Stroup GP1, the Spartan Harsey Talos, and I’d love a pair of knives from Furnace Brook Iron Works, specifically the Frontier Trade Knife, and a smaller utility knife to match it.
