Collectors - Your Next 3 Fixed Blade Knives?

As a maker and not a collector (I can't afford any of them). I would second Stuart Branson and add Tad Lynch, Scott Roush's latest work and suggest you look at Josh Fisher, a new JS.

Here are some past orders that I not only would spend my own money on, but did spend my own money on:
very clever, I see what you did there! lol

Currently, there are 3 non MS guys I'm working with on specific projects;
Matt Gregory
Dave Lisch
Chris Moss
(+ two unameable MSs and another JS who likewise is a super spy)

wrt Stu Branson, I already have one, and one that is quite different from what I usually like- in fact, generally speaking, I find the skean dhu to be a somewhat... 'difficult' design format- so it's a testament to his skills that I have it at all. But we will have a date with destiny. I think there is a kukhri in our future. Perhaps a Japan school interpretation...

ps. can't forget Ryan Weeks, we have something in the works as well...oh, and Magnus Axelson- shit I had no idea my list was getting so big! Some have been a long time in the making!

Three I have pending projects with Dave Lisch,David Broadwell,Magnus Axelson.Oh,and another in the works with J.Neilson.Yeah ,I know,he's a MS,but he does fly under the radar a little!

Here are three I have brewing.

1. Nick Wheeler MS test knife, Damascus Bowie
2. Dave Lisch MS test knife, Damascus Bowie
3. Mike Ruth Senior MS test knife, Damascus Bowie

Judging by some of the stock removal makers named mentioned. You guys have some homework to do. Especially if you expect your new purchases to hold their value. But I know that most of you don't so it is ok.

Interesting names on the forged side of the house. Always like to see trends emerging.

Good ones to have. I'm also down for a Wheeler MS test knife, and Dave Lisch is making me a bowie similar to yours from last year with a varation on his dragon damascus.

Hi CBR,

You know if enough guys like a particular stock removal guys work that in itself can make the value increase a lot

That is true of stock removal or forged blades. As well as handguns, muscle cars, watches, pens or any other collectible.

Three that would top my bowie/fighter list would be Tad Lynch, Stuart Branson and Sam Lurquin. I really enjoy the work I am seeing from this trio.

Other than condescension and perhaps some self-contradiction, I am not sure what that post added. Maybe if you would tell us the stock removal makers to which you refer then your post would be more helpful. TIA.

I don't want to offend anyone by omission. Some great picks have already been mentioned. Some names I come up with on my short/quick list:

Magnus Axelsson
Mike Quesenberry
Mike Craddock

I guess if your name starts with an 'M' you're OK. LOLZ!

Cautionary on pricing: Newer makers who are expecting to grow should avoid pricing ANY new 'non-extravagant' work above $1500. (3 x $1500 = $4500. Right at the midpoint of the OP's (Mark's) target.) Value pricing?

Tad Lynch makes a hell of a good knife.

Thanks for that contribution Coop - good choices. I am with you on the pricing point - I should think that knives from newer makers priced in that territory would be the exception rather than the rule. Not to say that there aren't knives.

G'day Mark,

I am going into this with a slightly biased view. As a collector and maker and an Aussie!

I am going with three Australian Bladesmiths (2 JS and 1 MS). I would love a nice forged blade from any of these three makers. (I know you asked for JS but Thomas flies under the radar and I have seen his cutlery in person at a few show and it is excellent!)

JS Bruce Barnett (Lucky that he is also helps me with his time and answers my questions): http://www.barnettcustomknives.com/index.html
JS Dee Hedges: http://www.darkwoodsforge.com/
MS Thomas Gerner: http://www.deepriverforge.com/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1

Hi Virginian,

Other than condescension and perhaps some self-contradiction, I am not sure what that post added. Maybe if you would tell us the stock removal makers to which you refer then your post would be more helpful. TIA.

You mistake condescension for a statement of fact. As well there is no contradiction....I clearly separated stock removal makers and forged blade makers.

As you know it is best to never use names.

The fact you asked for the makers names is exactly what I was talking about earlier. You have to do the homework. I have already done mine, which is why it is not condescension. Once you have done your homework you too will be able to look at the list and identify the makers, who while still making an excellent knife. Are no longer makers to invest in...purely from a ROI perspective.

My posts are added purely to point out that some makers are better to buy than others. Many of the makers listed here are solid makers who have a great upside.

BTW Virginian Im not sure what did your post added other than to tell me that my post may my have been condescending and contradictory. TIA :D

Do you guys have links to where I can see photos of these MS test knives from Wheeler, Lisch and Ruth? Thank you
