Im starting a bit ahead of myself (HS senior this year) but it would suck if this hobby got stuck at home and so I want to be thinking ahead. Prettymuch anywhere i go will have a no weapons policy so keep that in mind, if they have any firm rules about knives then I will follow them, but it will probly be a vauge no weapons policy, in whcih case i would like to carry what i can w/o kicking things up (and risking expulsion)

so my plan for college edc, at least until thanksgiving break and i have a better feel for the admin/reaction will be my leatherman micra, at which point i will leave it at that, add a ladybug in some happy un-weapony color, or bring my calypso and leek.

anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks.

At college no one cares about anything really.

I carry a 722 to stay under the length limit, but I brought my AFCK, a few other knives, and even bought a 7 inch kabar while I was here. The dorms specifically forbid having knives over 3.5 inches, but it's not like the RA or police will be searching my room.

Just carry a <3.5 inch folder and you should be fine.

cool, ill still test the waters a bit, especially if i go to someplace thats liberal like berkeley or grinnell (i am a liberal but i see/use knives as tools not weapons)

Just pick yourself up a good quality locking folder, and use it discretely and you should be fine. I made it through school with a mini-stryker and delica switching back and forth for years. Just use your head...Granted...things have changed since I graduated...but I think discretion will help you more than any blade length from getting reprimanded.

Keep in mind that in many states, if you live in a dorm, you're not constitutionally protected from search as you would be at home.

Get yourself a Benchmade 556 Mini-Griptilian with either a blue or yellow scales, and you'll be fine...Those don't look like "killer-knives", but will serve you well for the everyday "folder tasks" you'll find at college.

I was in college from 96-2000 and i carried a small ka-bar barlow with carbon steel blades... excellent knife. I used it in the cafe to cut a burrito a few times, no hassles. Dont brandish it and you should be fine. But id carry a slipjoint.. something that lookes like a pocket knife according to the general public... not a weapon.

You'll find that different schools have different standards of what is normal.
I went to a school that was heavy on agriculture and engineering. Everybody had a pocket knife. It didn't really matter how big.

By the way, look into the SWISSMEMORY. It's a SAK with a built in flash drive. Looks neat.

I went to a UC school in the 80's. No one cared about anything you did as long as no one was hurt. We'd practice nunchucks in the meeting hall!

Of course, in the 70's, we all carried Bucks on our belts in High School and no one cared either.

Its a different time now, a time when fingernail clippers are confiscated in airports.

Have you thought about a full size multi-tool? "No sir, its a pliers and screwdriver set!" The new Leatherman Charge is not cheap, but it has a good size 134CM liner locking blade with one hand opening.

If you're staying in a dorm, any knife might be considered a weapon, even a Micra or V'nox Classic. And unless your roommate is your best friend from highschool, there's no such thing as personal property and anything might get stolen. Also, if you're planning on "having a good time", whatever that may entail, leave the knife behind. Even if you're not doing anything wrong, a cop breaking up the fun might notice it on you and decide to ruin your day.

Another worry is snitches. If there's a no-tolerance weapon policy, and some sniviling twerp in the socialism club sees a knife in your pocket, you could lose the knife (if you're lucky), or even get expelled.

Living off-campus is different. I carried my autos or balisongs to class for 4 years, and nobody cared. But then, Arizona is a pretty lax place.

If you're worried about protection, do your homework and see what's still available for self defense. Chances are even pepper spray will be banned, but you should still be able to carry something like a kubaton/flashlight without raising an eyebrow. Even a sturdy ballpoint pen can work.

When I go to class I usually take my AFCK or large Grip, but I always have my Huntsman Lite now and my Case bonestag trapper for times when you know people are watching. glockman has good advice with the colored mini-grip, add a SAK and you're covered with a sturdy locking folder and a "friendlier" knife too ;)

Edit: Yea, if you live at home or off campus, things are different. Just some advice though, last semester some kid had a paintball gun in his car and someone walking thru the parking lot saw it on his backseat and called the cops thinking it was a real gun. Several cop cars show up and a few go pull the kid out of class and have him unlock the car and then realize it's a paint gun. Keep things out of plainsight, saves you the hassle.

Well...all colleges that I know of have a no weapon policy...good thing my knife isn't carried as a weapon. Politics of what you are makes no difference on why you carry a knife, and I bet most non-military personel here don't carry their knife as a weapon. In fact, I bet most military personel here carry their knife as a tool.

In the end, I'll go with intent. After talking to local Columbus PD officers, Ohio's law is intent...waht your intent is for carrying. My intent is not as a weapon, so I see no problem carrying. When I asked my school's crappy police department, all they told me was, "No weapons."

Carry away, and don't pull a knife on anybody. I'll leave it at that.

P.S. I carry a mini cqc and nobody has said a word.

I use my knives at school all the time, no one really says anything. I've used it to open up a coconut in the cafeteria and used it a few times in a bio lab (cutting plastic, tape, etc.). Also, one of my professors borrowed my knife in front of 200+ people to fix his laptop. Just don't brandish it around and you should be fine.

:eek: ...for cutting, right? please don't say it was for a screwdriver. (maybe it was a SAK.)

Find out the rules and regulations for your campus. Ask the campus police what is acceptable to them too, just to avoid unnecessary problems. I don't think you'll find it a problem to carry any reasonably sized one handed folder. Usually the rules are fairly straightforward in this regard, ie "no knives with blades longer than 5 inches" as a general policy. Of course if you have apartment style dorms they usually overlook the kitchen knives.

I think you're more likely to have the knife "horked" than to have trouble with the staff or cops. Don't take anything that can't be replaced easily. "Discreet" is the key word for using the knife.

SAK or small traditional pocketknife would be a good choice.

Ahh, definately if you're sharing a room with someone you don't know, don't bring any knife you don't plan to have with you at all times, shower, class, etc. You may trust your roomate, but you can't trust everyone that they may invite in, or leave the door unlocked while you're gone, etc.

Opinel OP3-7. Nobody could possibly consider a wooden handled folder made in the French Alps to be a weapon. And if it gets lost or stolen, just get another for ~ $8.

Im in college right now and I carry my BM 710 everyday...
Im not brave enough to attempt carrying my MT UT6 LOL.!!
