College EDC?

Zerileous,
Howdy! I live on a college campus, and I must tell you that if you're going to a state college there are some helpful tips for what knife to carry. Most schools WILL have a no weapons policy, and as such will have STRICTLY defined definitions of what a weapon is- including knives. If you were going to school where I live, a knife would be considered a weapon if it was a fixed blade of ANY kind, double edged, or was a locking knife with a blade over 3". They HAVE to define what a weapon is in order to make a judicial case against you. They may have a vague "or any similar object which could be used to harm someone or to a similar purpose" clause, but they HAVE to tell you what a weapon is so that if you have one you're clearly guilty of a violation. Second, when in school, your ROOM is your HOME. The same search and seizure restrictions that are in place for your home are in place for your college residence hall room. That means that you can have anything not illegal in your room and be perfectly fine. Your roommate can complain, but they can't seize your knives unless there is a credible threat (i.e. you've made a threat and thus done something illegal). To keep your knives absolutley safe, put them out of sight. Without probable cause they can't search through your stuff. Just remember that while you have rights, its not always a good idea to call attention to your use of those rights. Live simply, and don't flash knives about. That way you won't attract thieves, and you won't be seen as some kind of psycho. Contrary to popular belief, though, prejudices about knives are MORE rampant on some campuses than in regular society. You have to remember that the college campus is the cradle of liberalism in this society, and those people don't generally even want you to have a plastic knife in the dining halls. Have fun, and enjoy! I only hope I've helped you in some small way.

Sincerely,
Anthony

Get yourself a Benchmade 556 Mini-Griptilian with either a blue or yellow scales, and you'll be fine...Those don't look like "killer-knives", but will serve you well for the everyday "folder tasks" you'll find at college.

You absolutely can't go wrong if you follow Glockman's advice.

I'll give you the same advice I gave my son - use your head and carry a mid-sized SAK (Tinker, Super Tinker etc) and you'll be able to get throught 99% of your daily needs. As long as you are mature and don't flash whatever you decide on around you should have no problems. Good luck!

You could come to West Point... some people here will be upset if you carry a knife, but it's only really a problem if you are a plebe (freshman).

In other colleges, if your roomate turns you in or complains you could get in serious trouble. If at all possible, don't live in the dorms - thats just general advice.

SAK all the way, one with a really solid and functional bottle opener... :D Also, if you are like me, you may finally discover the one thing the awl is good for...

Trust me, your knife will be the last thing you will be worried about in college. You will have enough to worry about with 1) your studies and 2)where the next party is. Don't take a knife that will make you worry about who might see you with it.

this thread has definitely make me a little more aware
of the blade i carry on my campus.
(was an eki mini cqc7b, then a bm mini tsek, now a bm mini afck)

i did ask my university police about carrying folders,
to which they said the usual "as long as it's not this, that or that"
which it wasn't, so i started carrying.
talk to your university police, they should be cool with it.

and it's funny, in my recent awareness i'd been noticing just how often
i'll be asked to use my knife for all sorts of odd jobs.
one of my close friends even asked me for a knife recommendation.
we're going to go shopping soon. :)

the advice given in the previous responses is definitely good advice.
don't brandish or ever appear to use it in a threatening manner.
for tasks and emergencies only.
oh and verbalizing before you draw is usually a good idea.

Man, all these posts and only one looks at the SAK bottle opener a a crucial college tool?!? That alone will be worth it weight in gold at school.

Carry either a SAK General Issue/Soldier, Camillus Scout Knife or a Yellow Handled Case Canoe or Peanut, none of these knives would be considered weapons anywhere in the US, all have unoffensively shaped blades well under 3inches and none lock open. Be weary of advice to carry locking "tactical" folders on campus although you'd probably win in court it could possibly be more trouble than its worth. Also depending on where you are in the country South vs. Northeast for example has a lot to do with how knives are received. I personally carried a Wenger SAK everywhere All through college, even job interviews and never had a problem.

:eek: ...for cutting, right? please don't say it was for a screwdriver. (maybe it was a SAK.)

:D
abe m.

He used my Native III to pry a printer pin out. No damage though, so it was alright.

SAK is the perfect college knife. Cuts well, and has both bottle and can openers, as well a a corkscrew.

in my dorm room i have:

spyderco paramilitary
spyderco karambit
cold steel ti-lite (titanium)
cold steel ti-lite (zytel)
benchmade griptillian
benchmade 710 (coming soon)
BM41
Spyderco spyderfly
camillus CUDA maxx stiletto

my EDC is the benchmade griptillian or the zytel ti-lite. i don't whip it out and flash it around and do stupid ****. the main thing is, the knife for me is a tool, not a weapon. I pull it out to open mail, peel apples, cut oranges, cut steak at dinner sometimes (dining hall plastic knives suck). It's not a big deal and my friends have all gotten used to seeing something clipped to my pocket.

if you act like a mall ninja, people are going to be scared of you and your knife because they think you'll stab them in anger or some crap. if you act prudent and use it like it's supposed to be used - as a tool - people get comfortable and used to it.

Its safe having pretty much anything in the room as long as you don't bring it out. Carrying around campus... I wouldn't go with anything more than a SAK... maybe a ladybug.

Also, if you're going out to clubs or frat house, leave the knives at home.

Edit: If you have big scary knives in your room (like a CS Recon), your roommate could potentially make trouble for you if he doesn't like you.

I'm working on my first year as a postgrad, and I carry pretty much whatever I want to, so long as it fits local law. I don't really care what is thought of what I carry, as I don't act like a freaking moron and do something stupid with it.

Carry what you will, but be smart about it. Heck, I've a Queen #11 in my pocket, a Gerber 800 on my belt, and a Soldier riding shotgun in my bag.

yes, i cannot emphasize that point. anytime you go anywhere you'll be drinking, you leave all the sharp objects at home. it's not worth it.

as for the drinking, blades will definately stay at home, i may never come close to being angry enough to pull my knife on a person (just scared enough) sober, but you never know when wasted.

thanks for all of the advice.

Just check the policies and see what they say when you get there. Around here, the school uses the same laws as the state so if it's legal in Iowa then it's fine on campus. Same applies to living in the dorms to my knowledge, though thankfully I've never done that :)

As for my college EDC, it's usually my Mayo medium TNT for school and switching to my Hinderer Firetac for work, though sometimes they each get used for the other as well.

If you go to Bezerkeley or any other college or university in the People's Republik of Kalifornia, state law says that you may not have a fixed blade over 2", but places no limit on folders. Of course, butterfly knives and anything that can be concealed in a form that does not look like a knife (lipstick knives, for example) are forbidden by state law. As are gravity knives and switchblades over 2". Just keep in mind that if you stay in the dorms, they may have stricter rules there. Just don't do stupid things like wave it in front of people or even hint at violence. Times have changed and no one has a sense of humor any more. When I was a freshman at BYU I was caught with a rifle in my dorm room (idiot friend was playing with it in the hall when the RA showed up), and all they did was make me store it in the building where the cafeteria was. I could still get it whenever I wanted, just couldn't store it in my room.

I am just finishing up my senior year in college, and I have just been pretty much carrying in accordance with NYC laws. My school does have a very vague no weapons policy, but then again so does NYC, so I carry a tool not a weapon. For the longest time now I have been carrying a large TNT, and before that a large Sebbie. Nobody has ever said anything to me, or given me any problems about it. I just keep my knives out of sight (clipped to my pocket) unless I need to use them.

I too have taken out my knives in the middle of class to cut something, and never had any problems. In fact nobody really noticed as we were working on cable construction, and I needed a knife to trim off some fibers in a CAT-5 cable. I think the key point is that whatever you decide to carry don't flash it around or brag. Just carry it descretely, and when needed for something use it.

Of course if you are living on campus it is a whole different story. While you might not be able to get in any legal trouble for having a knife in your dorm room, it could cause problems with the school. You could get expelled if they feel you have broken their weapons rules or whatever other rule they like. Another good point was made about the security of your stuff. Living in a dorm is living with someone you don't know, and it is possible that whatever is left in your room could get up and walk away.

Discretion, man, discretion. If you're gonna get something for protection, take a martial arts or boxing course. If you carry a large EDC for protection, get something cheap that you won't feel bad about throwing away if you think you might get caught with it!
