Hi everyone,
I was setting up my spring schedule and found a recreation course titled "Wilderness Survival Skills" and is says: Preventing and respondint to emergencies in the wilderness; fire and shelter building, signaling, and land navigation.
At first I wanted to take it but the idea that the professor doesnt know how to teach survival skills is a real possibility. Also kind of worried that I would not be able to learn much from the class and it would turn out to be a drag or I drop it. What do you think? Anyone taken a survival class at a college? I know that it will not come close to a survival school but any one think that it would be worth the time?

I had to take a Science Course this summer to complete one of my Science Requirements.

The class was pretty fantastic! We went on some suprising excellent hikes and learned a lot about different Eco Systems

Your best bet would be to talk to the actual instructor thats going to be teaching the class. See what types of things you will be doing and what you'll be doing on the final exam...

Our was a night camp / backpacking trip which was fun. :)

I took a semester-long field trip in college that included a 21-day desert survival course in Utah, rock climbing in New Mexico, canoeing in Missouri, and visiting recreational facilities all over the country. It was a great experience and I highly recommend it. Regarding the survival portion, the desert instructor and the professor were both highly knowledgeable and experienced.

Even a weekend class with a mediocre professor or instructor would be a good learning experience. And a bad day in the woods is better than the best day in a lecture hall.

You should also look into a recreation/camping/road trip club at your university. Attend only the activities that interest you, and get the heck out of the dorm room on weekends.

Best Wishes,
Bob

You sure it's taught by a professor? This sounds like the kind of class that an experienced undergrad or grad student might teach.

I agree with the "contact the instructor" recommendation. Shoot her/him an email and see what the class will involve.

Look at it this way... Even if it's redundant, you'll get in some practice. And it sure beats organic chemistry.
