Here are two vintage - and refurbished hatchets for sale.
First - a Collins Boy Scout Hatchet Pattern (no BSA logo) in great shape. I purchased this, carefully cleaned it up (it had no damage) and reprofiled it to the specifications laid out in "An Axe to Grind". I then blued the head multiple times and used a combination of gun oil and bees wax to protect the finish. I then sharpened the edge and rehung it. I used a House Handle hatchet handle (14 inch) which was hand selected and came without a finish. The grain is very very straight. I hung the hatchet using a poplar wedge and left the haft about 1/8th inch above the eye. The hang went well and the head is on very straight. A metal wedge was not used. I then fire hardened the handle and sealed the haft and wedge with a few coats of boiled linseed oil.
The hatchet has not been used since being refurbished.
60 shipped.
Lastly I have a Plumb BSA Hammer Poll Style Hatchet (BSA Logo is intact and very legible).
This one needed very little clean up. I set the edge as outlined above, blued, protected, and rehung this. I was not happy with the hang and drilled out the wedge and took it off. I looked through my pile of axe and hatchet heads and decided I did not need this one. It will make someone a good user with some work when rehanging it.
