Collins Legitimus restoration

What kind of file is in the 3rd picture? thx

Vintage Heller Multi-Kut. Simonds bought out Heller (mid 50's?) and continued to make the Multi-Kut for many years (maybe still). They're badass files. I have several vintage ones in very good condition. I only have one unused Multi-Kut. It's stamped 'Lennox' but the dealer confirmed that Simonds made them for Lennox.

"Multi-Kut: Known as the world's most versatile file because it combines the uses of flat and mill files
The coarse teeth allow material to be removed fast (like a flat file)
double chip-breaker design generates a smooth finish (like a mill file)"

And thanks, guys. I've wanted to do that one for a couple months but just never had the time.

S_P........... GREAT JOB. :applause: Wonderful what a little elbow grease will do. Lotta folks would just trash that and head to Wallyworld for some POS made in China:barf:

What more can I say? Thats a nice looking axe. You done a real good job there. That first picture is just plain classic!

BTW, what are the dimensions of the head?

Late to jump in here Peg, but you sure did a great job on her. Thanks for restoring another vintage axe.

My regards, Tom

Looks great. Do you mind if I ask what all did you do to the head? I love that color. A wire brush and vinegar soak or trade secret stuff??

No vinegar. Just a brass wire cup brush on an angle grinder. The brass cups are slower than the steel wire cups but they leave more of the patina intact. After it's cleaned up I coat it with a mixture of beeswax, boiled linseed oil and turpentine.

Thanks for the reminder. I should have posted that. 3 pound head and a 30" handle. I've been wanting to try a shorter handle with a full size axe.

She's a looker. Much nicer than a traditional size boy's axe. I have some between 2 1/2 and 3lbs hung on 28" to 30" handles that are really nice to carry around in the truck. Do a lot more work than a boy's axe for sure.
Interested in what you think after you work with it a little because I know you favor longer handles.

I sold it because I didn't like the short handle.

It fetched a pretty penny - surprised me.

Earlier in this thread I think I stated that this was a 3 pound axe. It was actually a 3-1/2 pound axe and to me it felt clunky on a 30" handle. I did a 3 pound Craftsman double oval stamp on a 30" and it felt real nice. I gave that one to a good friend and I still get to swing it now and again. 3 pounds and a 30" handle is a good combination for me.

LOL! Can't say that surprises me.
