Collins Machete

Just an update: The Collins 323 is no longer up on the site. They must have sold out. I don't know how many they had...but man they went quick. So who else snatched one of these up?

I got a receipt of my order today right after you posted that link so hopefully i got one of the 22" and on eof the 20" models.

Of course these designs are repeated from company to company. Why change what works, and beyond that there isn't really that much that can be changed among machetes of a particular style. Altering the blade just for the sake of making it different makes no sense at all, especially when it is already in its most effective form. I think that we were just amazed at how exact a copy the Imacasa is. The handle is exactly the same, the sweep of the blade looks very close and the tip is cut off just like the Collins. That detail especially is not needed on the Imacasa but they apparently wanted to make theirs just like the Collins. This is not a criticism of Imacasa. They are perfectly justified in trying to replicate the Collins, and from the looks of it they turned out a great machete.

And we're all glad they did! With original Collins machetes being so hard to come by, it's nice that Imacasa is able to make a machete so close to the originals--and not only are they cheaper to get but you won't feel so bad if you mess around with modding them and beating them the hell up! :D

I like the way this machete trend has been going. Something tells me it'll be good for the available variety of patterns. :D

Absolutely. I think that I will pick that particular Imacasa up at some point. Uh oh, looks like a new addiction has begun .

Blast it!!! Knew I should have just ordered one yesterday instead of waiting until today.

I picked up one of the 1077 Made In USA 18" Collins models with the round tip and two of those 14" models from Guatemala while I was at it. All very old yet in very very good condition. The 14" ones came with some nice sheaths.

Woot! Just got a shipping confirmation e-mail
This is the only part i was worried about.

Got Mine in today. I'll def have to sharpen these guys up, but i'm satisfied. I wouldn't mind micarta handles like you fiddleback guys got. I may look into getting some slabs and sanding them down. Ither way i'm pretty stoked.

I'm sure you could send it to Fiddleback and he could make yours just like ours. ;)

Nice! Mine should be here on the 5th. I also ordered one of each. How does it feel in hand, balance etc? Which do you like better the 20" or the 22"? I will probably try to mod mine too. I don't know that I am capable of putting a good edge on it either (due to the size). I've never sharpened anything over 10" so I might have to get someone to convex them for me. We'll see how it goes though.

Just use a garden file to establish the edge. If you want it finer than that, just polish it up with a stone or two. :)

The 22" feels nice and smooth, it'll def make a good brush clearer. The 20" feels tip heavy, and really feels like it will do some awesome chopping. I'm going to probably get a bit of an edge tomorrow and take down some shrubs that have been giving me a fit in the back yard.

What about convexing the edge? I've never been able to get a scary sharp convex with the mousepad/sandpaper ordeal but i've def been able to get a machete sharp edge. I thought about cutting my mousepad down and putting it on a sanding block and sliding the block instead of the blade. Any suggestions?

That's a sound plan. It'll work nicely. :)

That sounds like a good idea. I can actually get a pretty good edge with the mousepad technique, maybe I'll try that on the machetes.

I made my block up and worked on it for about 30 minutes. I got it sharper and the edge def looks better. I wanna sit down one day when i have some time and really go to work and get a pretty even edge on it. Anyways i'm going to cut some stuff tomorrow just to test it out lol.

How much would one of the pointer versions go for? I found one at a gun show today for $85 is that too much? It's a bit worn but I think it still has a lot of life left in it.
